Honouring Laura Gover and Supporting Our Community
Our community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of our valued colleague, Laura Gover, whose dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to students enriched Camosun in profound and lasting ways. Many of us are deeply shaken that her life was taken through intimate‑partner violence, and it is difficult to make sense of such a devastating loss. Even in this sorrow, I know we remain focused on honouring who Laura was and the light she brought to our college.
Laura had a remarkable ability to brighten any room with her smile. Her sharp, warm sense of humour, her deep care for learners, and her constant drive to enhance her teaching practice made her an extraordinary educator and colleague. She believed in balance, in joy, and in living fully — and her two beautiful girls were at the very center of her world.
As we remember Laura, we hold her family, friends, students, and colleagues close in our thoughts. Her legacy will continue to shape our community for years to come.
A meaningful way to honour Laura is through words. This site is an invitation to faculty, staff, and students to share written reflections, memories and messages on how Laura positively impacted your life and our college. These stories will become a lasting gift for her daughters, offering them a window into the incredible woman their mother was.

Laura was a bright light! She had a wonderful quality of warmth, and she oozed joy. Laura was also cheeky, with a tremendous sense of humour. Her self-deprecating jokes indicated a strong self-confidence. And rightly so…she was an exceptional researcher, teacher, and role model for all of us. I always felt fully seen by Laura, she had the innate ability to be fully present with me. Over the few years I worked with Laura, I came to realize that everyone who knew her (colleagues and students alike) felt like they had a special bond with her. Laura had the incredible ability to make each of us feel like we were special to her. She was certainly special to us. Her warmth and light are deeply missed.

There are people who move through the world with a kind of effortless grace - Laura was one of those rare souls. She brought a calm intelligence wherever she went, paired with an energy that made conversations brighter, ideas sharper, and ordinary moments feel a little more meaningful. Laura cared deeply about her work, her students, her girls, and the team around her. Her courses weren’t just classes; they were crafted with thought, curiosity, and the desire to make learning meaningful. She was principled, intentional, and endlessly generous with her insight. I admired her ability to stroll into a room and bring in clarity, humour, and a sense of purpose that invited others in. She was a dance partner with ideas, someone who could challenge you one moment and build on your thoughts the next, always with a “yes, and…” spirit that made you want to think bigger, try harder, and do better. And yet, alongside her confidence, there was a quiet vulnerability she shared with those she trusted. She could be open about her struggles—not in a way that made her seem fragile, but in a way that revealed her depth. She led with an open heart. She was honest, even when honesty was hard. That mix of strength and softness is what made her extraordinary. I miss her painfully - the quick chats, the unexpected insights, the way she could brighten a day without even trying. I miss creating things with her, thinking through ideas together, laughing about some small absurdity in the hallway. It’s strange how the rhythms of workplace camaraderie can weave themselves into the fabric of a life, building a sense of connection that becomes obvious only when it’s gone. What I will carry forward is her curiosity, her courage, and her willingness to be both strong and vulnerable. The way she listened. The way she made things better simply by being there. The way she showed that even in dark times, it’s possible to lead with generosity and grace. I will remember her confidence. Her humour. Her kindness. Her brilliance. And above all, her heart. Thank you, Laura, for everything you brought into our lives. You are deeply missed and will never be forgotten. Steve

Laura was such a phenomenal instructor and had a major impact on my life. I will be eternally grateful to her and am absolutely shattered and heartbroken over this news. I was really sad when I started my program because I lost my dog who was my entire world. Laura's presence, demeanour, cheerfulness, and positivity made me happier and gave me a much needed distraction from constantly missing my dog which I really appreciated and needed at the time. I was also not thrilled about the program I started, nor the career I was heading toward but I didn't see any better options. Fortunately, after kindly noticing and encouraging my strengths, Laura asked if I was studying management, suggested I consider it, and directed me toward a new program Camosun just started which was the perfect fit for my values, skills, interests, past experience, and current job. She restored my confidence and gave me hope and excitement for my future which I had been missing. For the first time all because of her, I finally feel like my past, present, and future all make sense which I had been seeking for quite some time. My life is truly better for meeting her and I know without a doubt I'm not the only student she impacted in this way because she clearly cared about her role as an instructor and her students both as students and individuals so incredibly much. If she was like this to us, I can't even imagine how great of a mother she must have been and am sending her daughters all the love in the world but know nothing will ever make up for their unimaginable loss. It's not possible to express in words what a truly beautiful human, both inside and out, that Laura truly was. The college, community, world, and her friends and family lost such a bright-light angelic saint of a human. She truly was one-of-a-kind and will be missed by everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Laura was an electrifying presence. She made me excited to commute for a 3hr, 8:30AM lecture. She would come beaming into the room, exuding this kind and positive aura; an absolute light in the community. I wish for everyone to know her story, to know her impact. For someone so involved, intertwined, and committed to everything she was a part of, there will always space held for her. I am so grateful I got to know her. I am honoured to have been taught by her. Sending so much love to all those grieving; take care of your heart. <3
