Donald Larry "Coach" Findley of Brigham City, Utah passed away at Ogden Regional Medical Center on August 25, 2021, at the age of 78 from a severe COVID infection, despite being fully vaccinated, with his wife and sons comforting him at his side. Larry was born in Augusta, Arkansas on March 12, 1943. The youngest of 6 children, he was raised by his mother Ina. He left home for Costa Mesa, California at the age of 14, where he graduated high school in 1962. It was there that he developed a deep love of football. He attended Orange Coast College for two years, where he played football and helped lead his team to a Junior Rose Bowl victory. He then enrolled at San Diego State where he started at offensive guard on the football team. Drafted by U.S. Army, he was stationed in Korea for two years before returning to college. When he returned to San Diego State, he regained his starting position and helped lead the team to a football National Championship. He graduated from San Diego State with a degree in Business Administration and decided to become a teacher and football coach. In San Diego, he met the love of his life. He married Barbara Bowman on August 22, 1970, and they recently celebrated 51 years of marriage. After teaching and coaching in California and Idaho, they settled in Brigham City in 1978. Larry taught and coached in the Brigham City community for over 30 years. As a teacher and coach, the most important things to him were not grades or win/loss records, but ensuring his students and players were successful in life. Late in his teaching career he transitioned into teaching at the adult and alternative education high school. He worked hard to ensure success in life for those who many had given up on, and his students respected him greatly for this. Those who knew him will remember him for his kindness, generosity, occasional stubbornness, and tremendous compassion for others. His impact on those around him cannot be understated. He has provided guidance and support to countless players and students, altering the life path of many for the better. He had a strong faith in God and was an active participant in the Community Presbyterian Church. In his retirement he enjoyed golfing, taking his dogs on walks, volunteering at the local animal shelter and meals-on-wheels, and most of all spending time with and talking about his grandkids. He was an extremely proud father and grandfather. Larry is survived by his wife Barbara Benson Findley; sister Barbara Rains and brother Lewis Earl Findley; sons Austin Daniel Findley and Brian David Findley; grandchildren Caroline Elizabeth Findley, Colin James Findley, and Clare Catherine Findley; and his beloved dogs Sissy and Sweetie. He was preceded in death by his mother Ina Golden Mayberry Findley; Sister Doris Jean Findley; and brothers William "Billy" Scott Findley and Russell Dean Findley. A virtual funeral with take place on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Noon Eastern. Details are available at: https://www.gatheringus.com/memorial/larry-findley/7913. Coach taught valuable lessons to his players. I was able to play 4 years of high school football under his reign. He was very tough, even to the point of putting on a helmet with no other pads and playing quarterback for scout offense to show the defense that they couldn't stop him and therefore they needed to be better. He would get in the defenders face telling them to toughen up and hit him when they would hesitate to lay a hit on a non padded coach, that he could take it pads or no pads. He would run us to exhaustion doing the wagon wheel to push us to our limits. My favorite memory of Coach was when I broke my femur sophomore year and he visited me at home in my bed several times after school to bring me my homework and make sure I knew about my assignments and chat about the team, and his feelings about having faith and hope in God. I knew that he was tough and had very high expectations, but that he was a man of faith and had a tender side. I know that many of us Box Elder Bees are better, stronger, more resilient men because of our time with Coach Findley. Love and Condolences to the Findley family. Casey Leavitt

What a wonderful memorial. I never met Larry, but was a high school friend of Barbara. I feel like I know him now and would have loved to have met him. The memories that you all share will be a blessing for you in the years to come. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had the distinct honor to not only know Coach Findley as my little league football coach, but also was blessed to know him as a father figure. I was beyond blessed to know the Findley family and spend significant time in their home growing up as a young teenager in Brigham City. In their home you always knew three things; love, laughter, and discipline. Coach was an amazing person...who not only cared about his sons' friends, but showed that love by his actions/words. Even though he wasn't my coach during my high school years, Coach always would stop and ask how I was when we would be hanging out with Austin and ensured we were all on the right path moving forward. Barbara, Austin, and Brian...words cannot express how deeply saddened I was to hear of Larry's passing. Please be comforted in knowing he is with God now, may you each feel His presence moving forward. My love and condolences to each of you and yours...Larry did it right and we all miss him dearly!
