***********************************

Klaus (Nik) grew up in Zermatt, Switzerland with his parents and six siblings. He became a Swiss Mountain Guide and his love of adventure and the outdoors brought him to Canada in 1976. He worked winters as a heli ski guide with Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) and summers as a mountain guide in the Swiss Alps. He lived in Valemount BC until 1985, moved back to Switzerland for three years, then moved to Vernon BC with his family in 1988 where they built the Lord Aberdeen Hotel at Silver Star Mountain. He owned and operated the hotel for 36 years until his retirement in 2014, and many guests became lifelong friends in that time.

Klaus was extremely active and came to love motorcycling later in life. He got his license at 53, then bought a bike and left for Mexico the next day. Since then he rode the Continental Divide and to the East Coast, toured South Africa, Namibia, Morocco, and all through Europe, and even traveled the Silk Road.

He also picked up running and ran three marathons: Death Valley, California, Lausanne Switzerland, and Kelowna BC. He continued to ski, cycle, golf, and travel internationally until his health began to decline in 2021.

He is reunited with his parents Anna and Vitus, his brother Toni, and his wee dog Abby (who he didn't want!).

Klaus will be deeply missed by his partner of over 20 years, Shironnie Thompson, along with his siblings Marianne (Georges), Therese, Ruedi (Esthi), Franz (Carrie), Andreas (Alexandra); children Pascale (Reto), Helen (Shawn), Jonas (Katherine), Simone (Murray); step children Shane (Orange), Ryan, Brady; grandchildren Lara, Elena, Mia, Kai, Willa; and friends.

There will be no service at his request but please leave a tribute below if you would like to.

CIDP In the fall of 2021, my Papa experienced some stumbles and falls. As time would go on, he lost the use of his legs and then hands and arms, along with some ittermittent vision trouble. He remained shockingly positive throughout all of it. He told he me it was ok, he'd done so many things, after all he didn't spend his life on a bar stool. After many many tests of all kinds (including bloodwork being sent to the USA), he was told he had CIDP, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. According to his doctors, this condition does not affect lifespan, only life quality. In the end, my dad couldn't use his arms or legs, or suck a straw, and barely talked. In May of 2024 the bed sore he'd had on his foot since January was horribly infected. There was talk of amputation but they decided to try a course of antibiotics. When this was done they did not check to make sure the infection was completely gone, and it was not. He ended up back in the hospital in July and once again there was talk of amputation. In the end he chose to decline treatment and he was taken off antibiotics. He stopped eating on Friday, moved to hospice on Wednesday and passed away on Saturday August 3, 2024. I want to thank his partner Ronnie. She took him to countless appointments and cared for him so well, even through moments of frustration. She truly is an advocate you want on your side and we are all so grateful he had such a wonderful partner through this difficult time.

Klaus was a true gentleman. He always had time for a chat when we crossed paths. He was so humble you would never know that he was such an accomplished person. I was very sad to hear of his passing.

I will miss you forever Papa. Thank you for everything you've taught me and done with me, like the West Coast Trail, all the birthday bike rides (yours and mine), skiing, climbing, not to mention those tricky WB crosswords! I am so grateful that I inherited your love of the outdoors and your iron stomach! I've attached a favourite photo, from my high school graduation.

Klaus was such a kind and positive man with a true soul for adventure. Not only was he a mountain guide but he also ran three marathons, the Death Valley, Lausanne and Kelowna. Klaus was the most beautiful skier I ever saw and he took to mountain biking quite naturally. When hiking with Klaus we often wondered how he could cover so much ground while looking as though he was hardly making an effort, the mountain guide stride. Klaus loved travelling especially in the last few years before his illness when he could travel by motorcycle. His trips all through Europe and in South Africa, Namibia, Morocco and lastly the Silk Road where he went through countries like Turkey, Iran and the Stan’s. Most importantly Klaus loved his children and his family and he wasn’t afraid to show it. I am so grateful to have shared the past 20 plus years with this special, kind man and I will miss my daily “good morning my darling “.

I am/we are deeply saddened by Klaus's passing and wish to pass along our heart felt condolences to the family (and to 'Ronnie' who we met here in Halifax when she & Klaus visited Nova Scotia on their motor bikes almost a decade ago now). I met Klaus in the mid to late 70's when I joined CMH Heli-Skiing and was appointed to Valemount as the Ski-Shop Mgr there and we worked and skied the Cariboos together out of Valemount for several seasons before I was appointed Marketing Manager of CMH and left the Valemount operation. We stayed in touch after I departed CMH in 1982 and returned to Nova Scotia. Some of my fondest memories of my youth and early skiiing career in those days were spent with Klaus and his family and our mutual firends and associates at CMH's Valemount Heli-skiing. RIP Klaus! I will be taking a few ski runs and motorcycle trips in your honor this winter my friend! Love to your family from our family here on teh East Coast of Canada! - Dave Ker
