Kitty Marie Pine Nard, age 65, of Glendale, CA passed away peacefully at 5:44 a.m. on May 27, 2020, the exact time of the L.A sunrise. She went to the hospital, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and a few days later she died. We created this memorial page to celebrate her life. Our mom was our hero. She taught us how to work hard, love without conditions, think for ourselves, and help those less fortunate. She gently guided us through life and provided us with the lessons we need to survive without her and know that we will be okay. Mom would NEVER just come out and tell us the answers. She fully believed in "teaching a person to fish." And boy can we fish. Throughout her life she took care of others. Effortlessly, Mom's calmness and acceptance invited others to open up to her. But it was her compassion, thoughtfulness and ability to listen, hear, and support (without judgment) that impacted so many and made so many long lasting friendships. She will stay alive through her 4 daughters, son-in-laws, sister, brother, 5 grandchildren, framily, friends, colleagues, students, and anyone who met her. She often said us 4 girls were her greatest accomplishment, but "she was the wind beneath our wings." Kitty Nard strongly believed that education could open doors and change lives. She experienced this herself when she returned to school as a single mother of four. In 1994, she joined the CSUN community as a transfer student and found herself a home. She began teaching in the English Department in 1998 while continuing to pursue her own education. She would go on to earn a Master of Arts in Creative Writing in 2000 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2004. Her perseverance and passion for education inspired many. Over the twenty-two years Kitty taught at CSUN, she shared her passion and encouraged her students to follow theirs, reminding them along the way that "If she could do it, they can too." Kitty's family has created this scholarship to continue her legacy and dedication to inspiring and helping others. Ways to contribute: 1. I was one of Kitty Nard's students in 2016, I took her African American Literature Course. I adored her and she truly gave me a new appreciation for American literature through the works of so many great writers who were ignored or mistreated during their time. She was so fun, knowledgable, and truly a kind woman. She definitely made her impact on me. I am currently employed at CSUN and was hoping she was one of the familiar faces I'd see again. One of the memories I'll treasure with her is when she asked us to guess her favorite book of all time through hints and I was the one who guessed correctly that her favorite book was Charlotte's Web. She truly embodied the character of Charlotte the spider. Her memory will definitely live on and I will happily share everything I learned from her on to the next generations. Fly high Kitty.

I met Kitty in 2001 when I was transferred into the English department clerical staff. Kitty was always kind, calm and friendly. She always had time to check how I was. Even in mid semester craziness Kitty was Zen. She turned 50 the month before me. A colleague had given her a cake with a large 5 0 Icandle in the middle. When it came time for my 50th she brought in those candles to celebrate my birthday! I still have them and think of her often. ❤️

I was a student of Kitty back in 2014-2015. Her class was an absolute riot with flourishing personalities that were invited to express themselves through classroom discussions related to each week's readings. What I really took away from Kitty's class was her advice to embrace my preference and overall love for YA literature, in a field where I felt displaced due to everybody around me consistently carrying around Critical Theory texts as "casual reading." It's now 2023, and while I was browsing the CSUN site in search of an email address, I stumbled upon the Kitty Nard Memorial Scholarship and this link that informed me of her passing two years ago. It's heartbreaking, but my memories of Kitty's voice and cool demeanor is a testament to just how much of an impact she had in me despite having only taken one course with her. I, for one, will never forget her.

I met Kitty as a young TA that thought he knew everything and was out to change the world. I remember having a discussion with her about my classes and how my students didn't seem to understand what I wanted from them. She looked me straight in the eye and said "They will give you what you need, not what you want and that is the best." She changed my life so many times over with her wisdom, her nurture nature, and her laugh. She was there for me in the high and lows, with no expectations, with no judgment, always with love. I will miss you Kitty until we see each other again. In the meantime, keep on dancing at the tune of your beautiful heart.

I've come to understand that there are people in this world who are not entirely OF this world. These people are rare; they are of course entirely human but they contain a spark of the divine. Kitty contained more than just a spark. Her friendship remains one of my life's greatest blessings and I am grateful to have experienced the divine through her love. Karen and I extend all of our love to her family.
