Kevin Yost passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 25th, 2019 at the age of 28 in Sacramento, CA. Kevin was funny, gentle, kind-hearted, open-minded, determined, and always wanted to help the people around him. He was a devoted friend, loving brother, gracious son, affectionate husband, passionate transportation planner. His loyalty, sense of humor and compassion will be missed by everyone. He left a lasting impression on anyone he came into contact with. Kevin attended California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) and earned a B.S. in Management Information System. In the meantime, he started developing interests in urban planning. After a few years working in public-sector technology consulting, he pursued and received his Master of City and Regional Planning and a MS Engineering, each with a Transportation Planning Specialization from Cal Poly SLO in 2018. Kevin worked as a transportation consultant at Kittelson & Associates, where he brings his enthusiasm for helping communities build safe, effective, and sustainable transportation systems. Kevin focuses on transportation safety and bicycle and pedestrian planning. Kevin cares deeply about the environment and enjoys hiking in nature. He is adventurous and likes to explore new things. He also enjoys biking around Sacramento, taking a walk in the Curtis Park, and trying new food. Kevin is survived by his wife Lu Yu, mother and father Terri and David Yost, and sister Kristi McWilliams and brother-in-law Brian McWilliams; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and countless friends. In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that you consider making a charitable donation to and/or WALKSacramento www.walksacramento.org/donate/ and/or Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates. Please note that any donation you make will be matched by an anonymous donor. These two organizations work hand-in-hand to promote sustainable transportation in the Sacramento region through planning, advocacy, and community empowerment. Your donations will go toward leading community bicycle rides, advocating for walking and biking infrastructure, and hosting programs at schools to encourage the next generation of bicycle commuters. Join us in celebrating the life of Kevin Yost. The Celebration of Life will be held at 10am on September 22nd at Curtis Park Sacramento. A light lunch will follow our commemoration for Kevin. Anyone who is young at heart is welcome to play ping pong and a few other lawn games! Dress code will be Smart Casual.

Kevin was an amazing friend. All of us who were part of the Cal Poly Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) will miss him deeply. I'll remember when we stayed in lab past midnight the week before finals to work on our traffic simulation models, the tips he gave me on applying to grad school, the long car ride to visit transportation firms in LA during which he wowed us with his impressive Chinese skills, and when we worked on a year-long project to propose improvements to pedestrian safety, which culminated in a trip to Minneapolis to present our project. I'll always admire how he pursued his passion for transportation planning/engineering by going back to Cal Poly to earn his MS/MCRP. Even though we lost touch when Kevin graduated, I always knew that Kevin was around when I saw him commenting on posts in the "New Urbanist Memes for Transit-Oriented Teens" (or NUMTOT) Facebook group, where he engaged in seemingly daily conversations (and sometimes lively debates) to inform people about transportation. Kevin was an amazing person and we'll miss him deeply.
