Kevin Sean Phillips, 61, of Upper Marlboro, MD died suddenly at his workplace on August 10, 2020. He was born on February 15, 1959 in Fairbanks, Alaska to the late Donald Phillips and Margaret Vrhovac Phillips. He lived in Dundalk, MD during the years of elementary school and later moved with his family to Bowie, MD which was the place he considered home. He graduated from Bowie High School and then attended the University of Maryland in College Park, MD where he earned a BA degree in Speech Communication. Kevin married Regina Casey Phillips in Upper Marlboro, MD on September 12, 1990 and they lived in Croom, MD. Kevin had one son, Sean Patrick Phillips, who was the light of his life. He was a great father who was always involved with Sean's activities and school. Most recently Kevin was employed as a Maintenance Mechanic at the College of Southern Maryland, where he could fix almost anything. He had a special interest in the restoration of historic houses and buildings. Through the years Kevin developed a great deal of expertise and many specialized skills to help restore these properties. He liked to use original windows, siding, hardware, flooring, antiques, and anything else he could salvage from the property to restore a building or home to the way it looked when it was first built. He liked to fish, hike, and backpack. He enjoyed both the beach and the mountains and especially loved Topsail Island beach in North Carolina and the Appalachian Trail. He enjoyed skiing and never minded the cold weather. The years that Kevin spent as a Boy Scout Leader were an important part of his life and the positive impact that he had on many young people, as well as the other leaders, is immeasurable. Kevin loved to blast loud music when he was working around his old house. He loved the music that he grew up with including Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, Evanescence, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Sheryl Crow - the list goes on. He loved Christmas, and Hallmark movies, Star Wars and super hero movies. He was interested in ancient history, American history, and biblical history. He loved to explore old houses and historic properties where he absorbed their stories and appreciated the craftsmanship. He was kind, funny, and always willing to help anybody with anything. Kevin was the one you called when you needed something, always steady and dependable. A jack of all trades. He enjoyed a good joke and telling stories to make people laugh. You were lucky if he gave you one of the crazy nicknames that he liked to assign to people that he knew. He was close to his family and many friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He remained lifelong friends with a long list of the "kids" he grew up with in Bowie and those friendships, and the others he made along the way, meant the world to him. He is survived by his wife, Regina Casey Phillips and his son Sean Patrick Phillips of Upper Marlboro (Croom), MD; his siblings: Donny Phillips of Bowie, MD, and Randy Phillips (Hannelore) of Estes Park, Colorado, and his mother Margie Phillips of Bowie, MD. He is preceded in death by his father Donald A. Phillips. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in his honor to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center 302 Tortuga Lane, P.O. Box 2095, Surf City, NC 28445. Donations can be made directly at www.seaturtlehospital.org

Monni Liskey from Odenton, MD, wrote on Aug. 20, 2020 Regina, Sean and family, I met Kevin in the early 70's and have so many wonderful memories. We reunited through Bowie High gatherings and he is still the same fun, sweet and caring person that he was as a teenager. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sheila Levings from Ellicott City MD, wrote on Aug. 20, 2020 He was "Mr. Phillips" to me, although a bit younger. He was a kind, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and brave gentleman, the type of person rarely met today. I knew him from CSM where, before the pandemic restrictions, he would stop by my office on the La Plata campus each day he worked for a special caramel candy. Many others would come by for a piece or two of candy also, but he would regularly "secretly" supply me with bags of them, always declining acknowledgement of his generosity. To say he will be missed at CSM is an understatement. He could make a tough day bearable with an insightful comment, and a good one better with a shared laugh. I feel privileged to have known him. To his family and friends at this most difficult time, I offer condolences and prayers; I hope for them, especially, and for those he worked with most closely at CSM, that their grief and pain will give way to memories of better times and of his unique spirit.

Rest in peace. Ryan Wilson from Maryland, wrote on Aug. 19, 2020 Saddened by this unfortunate time. "Mr. Phillips" was one of my scout leaders. He was always down for a great time and we have many memories of smiles and laughter. He had our backs right or wrong as a Rattle snake guardian. Im honored to say I have nothing but great memories of an Amazing leader and genuine person.
