On the inhale is who you think you are; on the exhale is who you really are.

Carlence Marquis "Keith" Mitchell was born on July 24, 1974, in Garland, Texas — a city that would produce one of the most extraordinary second-act stories in American sports history. Known affectionately as "Cashmere Keith" for his sharp, fashionable style, he was as comfortable in a tailored suit as he was in a linebacker's stance. What defined him, however, was not his wardrobe or even his athletic gifts, but his relentless refusal to be defined by circumstance. At Texas A&M University, Mitchell became a cornerstone of the famed "Wrecking Crew" defense, earning First-Team All-American honors in 1996 with 14.5 sacks and winning Defensive MVP of the 1995 Alamo Bowl over Michigan. Despite that excellence, the 1997 NFL Draft passed without his name being called. He signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent and proceeded to prove every skeptic wrong — appearing in 79 consecutive games over five seasons, reaching the Pro Bowl in 2000, and setting a Saints franchise record with a 90-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Over seven NFL seasons with the Saints, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars, he accumulated 416 tackles, 19.5 sacks, and four interceptions. Then, in 2003, a devastating spinal injury changed everything. Mitchell was temporarily paralyzed. Where many would have surrendered to despair, he turned inward. Through yoga, meditation, and conscious breathing, he not only regained full mobility within six months but discovered a new calling. "Yoga definitely saved my life," he later said. "Meditation and yoga — it's really all combined, the whole mindfulness aspect of living saved my life." The man who once used anger to fuel his NFL career rebuilt himself with love and purpose. He became a certified master yoga instructor, co-founded the Congressional Yoga Association, spoke at the United Nations for the International Day of Yoga, and led veterans' wellness initiatives alongside Congressman Tim Ryan to address PTSD through integrative care. He was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015 and published his book, "Mindfulness Mastery Playbook: 8 Strategies for Winning The Game of Life," in 2025. Keith Mitchell died suddenly on August 2, 2026, at the age of 51. He leaves behind a legacy that transcends touchdowns and sacks — a legacy of transformation, healing, and the courageous reminder that adversity, met with awareness, can become purpose.

Condolences to the family. Keith was a great player but a better person off the field. A guy you could trust and respect who thought of others before him.
