“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

In Loving Memory of Kayode Adewumi Peters: Laughter. Vision. Legacy.

Kayode Peters was a man whose life was defined by purpose, passion, and the power of storytelling. Whether on stage, behind the camera, or guiding the next generation, Kayode was a creative force who lit up every room and every screen he entered.

To many, he will forever be remembered as Koko from the beloved TV series My Flatmates, a role that brought joy to countless Nigerian households. But to those who knew him and those he mentored, he was much more. Kayode was a pioneer, a platform builder, a gentle leader, and a tireless believer in the magic of comedy and collaboration.

Born with an eye for brilliance and a heart for people, Kayode began his journey in the world of Nigerian theatre. From those early days, his gift for timing, character, and cultural nuance set him apart. His love for performance wasn’t about fame; it was about connecting people through laughter and meaning.

He made history as one of Nigeria’s youngest independent TV producers and directors, starting with Papa Ajasco, then moving on to Crossworld Blues on DBN, and later the campus-based sitcom Twilight Zone at the University of Lagos, his alma mater.

His creativity knew no bounds from writing groundbreaking plays like Dawn of Decisions 2 to mentoring comedians who would go on to become household names across Africa and beyond.

Kayode played a foundational role in shaping My Flatmates; a show that became more than entertainment. It became a reflection of urban Nigerian life, filled with laughter, struggle, and shared experience. Characters like Koko, Gandhi, and Ogbos remain a part of the nation’s cultural memory thanks to his sharp wit and deep humanity.

But beyond the lights and cameras, Kayode’s true gift was his heart. He was a teacher. A mentor. A friend. A brother. A father. A man who gave selflessly, believed deeply, and created tirelessly. He lived with grace, led with humility, and laughed with his whole soul.

His legacy lives on in the careers he launched, the laughter he sparked, and the stories still being told by those he inspired. He didn’t just make us laugh he made us believe.

A great Hero, Warrior and a legend. A very peaceful humble man. Thank you for making my childhood so interesting with Flatmates. I am a big fan of Kayode Peters since I was a child and I am happy I saw him finally last year 2024 April at a movie premiere 🎥👍. He was such a perfect gentleman. It saddens my heart but what can I say or do. His death is so so painful but a life full of impact though short. May God console his wife and children and his siblings also. His pain is no more. His legacy will forever be remembered. He will be truly missed. KP lives on. Rest easy Kayode Peters Adewumi. You are forever in my heart always.

KP: "You know you write so well. Have you ever considered scriptwriting, maybe turning your lived experiences into something that shifts perspectives?" Me: "Erm… no, actually" KP: "You should. That your university story you shared on Facebook? It has the bones of a solid documentary. If you refine it and tell it right, it could resonate deeply." Me: "Hmm. I never thought of it that way. I will keep it in mind." KP: "When you’re ready, I will be glad to guide you. Even help you develop the script, step by step." Me: "Chai. This feels like a challenge now. I will let you know when I’m ready, maybe next year ( 2025) KP: "Great. Don’t sleep on your potential. Maximize your gift." I woke up to the heartbreaking news of your passing on June 28th. Kayode Peters, director, producer, mentor, dream-pusher. You saw something in me. I wish I had jumped at the idea in 2024 instead of postponing to 2025. Now, you've left with more than a suggestion, you’ve left me with a creative responsibility. That story will be told. June has been a roller coaster, emotionally and creatively. But this news, while heavy, doesn’t just weigh me down… it lights a fire. It’s more than grief, it’s a charge. Rest easy, KP. I will honor the nudge. May God give your family ( especially your wife and children) the fortitude to bear the loss. Odun a jina sira egbon. Olorun a te yin si afefe rere. Sleep well legend. By: Esther Ijewere
