Karl and I met in high school running with the drama club crowd. We lost touch after he transferred to military school and only reconnected in 2014 at our 35th high school reunion, which I think is also the only one either of us, along with Ruth and Anna attended. The four of us had a great time and stayed in touch ever since. Back in school, I honestly didn't even realize how incredibly brilliant Karl was. I am so honored I had the chance to get to know him again at least a little these past few years. What an amazing human, with never-ending inner strength. On top of that, he had a great wit, wry sense of humor, and always, always challenged me to state my case with facts and soure references when discussing the finer points of our opposing perspectives on a given topic. I am grateful a couple of us were able to visit Karl before all the pandemic madness set in. True to form, he showed us girls a good time. We went to his beloved Emily Anne Theater, dined on the river near the Wimberley town square and he essentially kidnapped and pressed us into service playing Bingo - no matter how much the ladies did protest (cursing like sailors the entire ride). And of course, we had a blast. Karl, you are greatly missed. Thank you for a lifetime of service to your country, your love of family, your fabulous cookies, and your kindness to everyone you ever met. Someday we'll play Bingo again to your heart's content (or at least until you win more games than me). Til then, rest well, my friend. Carola (Photo: Bingo hostage at the VFW, January 2019)

Here's a picture of Karl and I backstage at the EmilyAnn Theatre where we appeared together in the Gospel Accordin' to Texas back in 2008. I really enjoyed getting to know Karl through the years, and cherish all the great memories of him!

I’m very saddened to hear that Karl has left us… I was always amazed at how he kept a positive attitude even when he told me that Doctors gave him only six months to live. I knew Karl at DPS when I was assigned to them for a number of years and we also served together in Army Civil Affairs. There was nothing he would not do for you if you asked. He was also one of the brightest men I have ever worked with. We survived Command and General Staff College together and he took over my Detachment command position when I deployed to Iraq back in 2003. He was a good, good man! I will miss him!

This is the smile I'll forever remember. It never changed.
