Loved Ones

Luanne Brooten, Justin's Mother wanted to share the following statement: "My son Justin died yesterday of a drug overdose. He really never had a fair chance in life. When we adopted him at 6 months old in 1974 he had been turned down by a white family because he was part black, and a black family because he was part white. He showed signs of neglect at the foster home and suffered from milk anemia. We worked with our wonderful Dr. Watson to care for him and return him to good health. We thought by adopting him we could fix him and give him a wonderful life. We tried our best to give him a safe and loving home. He and his younger sister Jessica had a good relationship and brought us much joy. Then we adopted Susan, so he had two sisters. When he started school, the racism directed at our darling boy was heartbreaking and relentless. We did what we could to fight it, but it hurt him on so many levels. Then, as he reached his teenage years, he developed behavioral and chemical dependency problems that were devastating to our family. Counseling and repeated rehab stays did not seem to help. Then Steve read a book called "The Broken Cord" by Michael Dorian that described Justin perfectly. The medical people agreed that Justin was born with fetal alcohol effect. There was and is no known treatment or cure. The brain damage from his birth mother drinking while pregnant was irreversible. Then, as he reached adulthood and was on his own, he made mistakes that lead to jail time and the unfairness and destruction of the criminal justice system. Justin like so many other black, brown, and mixed-race people did not have a chance and it breaks my heart. Justin just wanted to be accepted and loved. He sought the love of a good woman over and over. I truly hope his final relationship was loving and supportive. And now we must go on like so many parents who lost their sons too soon."

I met Justin in the early 2000s. He was always kind, humble, and a great friend. From the time that I knew him, I had never seen him use drugs or even heard that he used. So it was both a huge surprise yet heartbreaking to have heard that he passed away due to an overdose. Do know that he had great friends up here in Duluth and if some of us had known the depth of his issues, we could have maybe been better friends by talking about it. My heart goes out to his family. He had definitely left us too soon. May your wings lift you and fly high, Justin.

I wish i had called you back. you were the first memory of real love outside of family. you were what allowed me to keep my sanity while there. you will always be in my memory. Your memories have not been tarnished by any bad behavior or ill situations. I remember you fondly with that big grin, your large loving hands, how warmly you hugged. You were always there to listen to me and be there for me. Thank you for the short time you spent in my life.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Justin was a good friend in Jr High, we drifted apart when he started using. I was always amazed at his artwork, I credit him for showing me the joys of drawing with a ball point pen. My condolences to his family and friends

This is a poem I wrote for the school when Justin was suffering ra cial bullying in grade school: We may be different colors and come from Different places, but each person from light to Darkest black--is really a shade from light to Dark of the very same color--Brown? And beneath our skin, we are all much the same. Red blood surges through all our veins. Our hearts all feel joy and pain, pride, and shame. We all need to eat and sleep just the same. The same diseases take their toll for all of man. Each of us is capable of love, hate, or compassion, And each of us first lives and then must die. Our eyes all see the same world, And cry the same tears. For each, the years pass too quickly, Too quickly to waste on prejudice and hate! Each of us is a human being, and-- Each of us is an equal creature under God! Luanne 1981
