Julia will be remembered by the many people who knew her as a fun loving, witty, caring, politically active and loving person. For those who had the privilege of meeting her, she is impossible to forget.

She was born in Cambridge on 11 December 1966. She lived in Uganda from the age of 3 to 5 with her mum, Lisa. They returned to England at the time Idi Amin was expelling all Asians from Uganda. They moved to London for a few years, and then to Dorset. She was academically bright and won a scholarship for her sixth-form years at Cranborne Chase School where she made life long friends.

At Kent University, she studied philosophy. Julia was very popular and arranged lots of great social events. In her twenties, she travelled extensively and spent time in South and Central America where she did voluntary work in orphanages and farms. Back in London, she did various jobs and enjoyed a wonderful social life and met Ted Barnes whom she shared a great love of music and life.

In 1996 she started working at the Premises Recording Studio in Hackney as General Manager and 3 years later became a director. Working closely with Viv Broughton, the business grew. Julia was always pro-active in environmental issues and in 2007 the Premises became the first solar powered recording studio in Europe. This led to her becoming an ambassador for positive environmental practice. She also ran the Premises Music Education Programme, which changed the lives of many young people.

Julia re-met Richard Preddy from Kent University in 2008 and they quickly became inseparable, moving in together soon after. They both loved the countryside and in 2015 moved to Elham, then Wootton in Kent. Whilst still working at the Premises, Richard and Julia started a very successful wild flower bee seed business and renovated their property.

Julia was vibrant, engaging and an inspiration. She will be greatly missed.

Julia was very charismatic. I met her for the first time on the night I met my wife. They were close friends. That was 1998 and at the end of that blurry night I only remembered her and my wife. All of the times I spent with Julia were filled with her sense of fun, honesty and integrity. She was very knowledgable on many things , music politics, relationships and always spoke with grace and humility. As I said she was charismatic. You always wanted to spend more time with her. And there was never enough time.

Julia organised the annual Premises JAZZ PIANO SUMMER SCHOOL, for which I was a tutor and course director. We worked together for over 20 years; she provided amazing continuity and held everything together, year after year. We'll miss you so much!

Dear Julia. I first rehearsed at The Premises when I was 18, 30 years ago, and first met you 15 years ago. I’m glad we made a couple of films together and enjoyed our chats, real and virtual, immensely. Always helpful, always kind, always wise. The worst news I’ve received since lockdown. I only knew you a little and so I can scarcely imagine how this news has affected your closest friends, family and colleagues. You have been much on my mind since I heard this terrible news. So very, very sorry this happened. Some things are so infair. Love, Des

Dear Julia, this is a picture of us all from Granny Farrer’s 80th Birthday. Mum told me that she used to say “Julia is a great case!” and that she loved you very much. As cousins we have shared many people in our lives but it is with deep regret that I did not know you better. I remember you from family occasions, from times when you came to visit, you loved the garden. I remember you as happy, chatty and with lots of laughter. A tree will be planted in our garden in the autumn for you, one that blooms and attracts lots of bees. I do believe our souls live on, I hope that you are happy and peaceful and loved with family and friends around you, perhaps having a sherry with Granny! I will think of you always. Love Amy xxx

I met Julia at The Premises working with Circus Normal, Spa Cru and the London Urban Collective youth music project. Julia was always so welcoming, warm and genuinely enthused by the education and outreach projects we were doing. She always had time for a studio tour, chat or a helping introduction to someone if you needed a specialist or a link to another professional. For all the great gigs in the sky, I know you're up there making it all happen Julia. Much love H xxx

Julia and I became friends as students in Whitstable where we shared roofs. My sense of 'home' at the time was not so much a place as being around my closest friends, and Julia's company was a balm and a tonic. Her empathy and non-judgemental kindness felt like a haven in times when I remember feeling quite lost and detached.I enjoyed her curious ,inquisitive open-mindedness.We shared a baffled amusement over life's absurdities and I ,too, would gleefully exploit her now-famous gullibility with yet more nonsense.Maybe it was a good foil for her philosophy books ;after all "the heart has it's reasons, which reason knows not." And then there was her morose-busting,provocative,incendiary sense of fun...one more long word for that...contagious! I think I remember(I think with some honour) being at some stage at least nominated for an 'honorary sistership' .Can't/ won't recall any initiation ceremony, and am not sure have been the same since. I'm glad Julia has lived her life so fully and in good company. It has always been a joy to meet her 'newer' friends at her parties in London and more recently with Richard at 'Pastoral'. So...many fond memories of a dear friend.A voice in my head saying dismissively "oh ,go on!" (you big woos) as if my comfort zone haven in this world meant nothing to her...and an image of her lovely self ,absorbed in some important daily daily ritual involving a coffee,a paper ,something chocolatey, particular creature comforts, twiddling her hair and occasionally guffawing (?is that the word) with scorn or laughter at some bit of nonsense. Goodbye to 'Jules' .I'm lucky we met.My love to you.I'll keep sharing what you've shared and won't forget you.
