"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted" Matthew 5:4
Joyce Carolyn Payne Yakes, age 83, of Istachatta, Florida died February 3, 2025.
Born October 20, 1941 in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, Joyce was the 3rd of 6 children of Ross Payne and Regina Cody Payne.
A Florida resident since childhood, she was preceded in death by her brother Robert Payne and sister Patricia Leave. She is survived by her husband, Jerry W. Yakes, her children, Jerry A. Yakes (Kelly) of St. Petersburg; Amy Cummiskey (Jim), of Dade City; and Catherine Timmons (Jon) of Bradenton; a sister, Jean Tebbs (John) of Slidell, Louisiana; two brothers, Tom Payne (Peggy) of St. Petersburg; and Jack Payne (Cydney) of Bushnell; and 11 grandchildren, Kal Cummiskey, Emma Yakes, Jameson Cummiskey, Jonah Timmons, Luke Yakes, Braedon Cummiskey, Dylan Timmons, Reid Yakes, Mason Timmons, Madeline Cummiskey, and Lyla Timmons.
Joyce and Jerry were married on her 21st birthday in 1962. They were a shining example of Faith and commitment. Together they enjoyed spending time on the porch of their home in Istachatta, scouting the woods for deer, and spending time with friends and family.
Her main focus in life was being the best wife and mother that she could be, and despite giving 100% of herself to that endeavor, she still managed to pursue a career in the public school system. She found pride in her work and strived to inspire any student she encountered. After retirement she spent her Sundays teaching Catechism at her church in Bushnell.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 5800 15. Ave S, Gulfport. A Celebration of Life will be immediately after Mass in the social hall

So many Joyce stories, but one lent season she was teaching her catechism group about the stations of the cross, when some parishioners asked to join the class. Then more people followed along. As the story goes Joyce taught a lot of people that day. Will always love and miss my dear sister in law and dear friend. Probably teaching cherubs in heaven.

Our deepest condolences to you all. Aunt Joyce was such a a great person. Always so much fun to be with, and she just had the biggest heart. Aunt Joyce had the best laugh, and she could always make you laugh too. She will forever be missed, and loved beyond measure. Much love to you all! ❤️ Mark, Reva, and family

I considered Joyce my "Sister" instead of "Sister In Law" What a wonderful life she had with Jay, and what a sweet love story they had together! Joyce loved Jay, her Children, and Grand Children unconditionally. JJ, Amy, and Cassy are perfect examples what a great Mom Joyce was! Mike and I admire their devotion and strength to their parents so. It was heart warming to hear from Joyce how much she also loved her Catholic Faith, her "kids" from teaching and Catechism, and all her friends and family! All the gathering's and parties Jay and Joyce had made happy memories for so many! My kids, and all the other kids, will always cherish the 3 wheeler rides and outdoor fun. Thanks for all the years of love , laughs, and smiles! Joyce you will always be missed, loved and in our prayers! Love, Mike and Barbara

Joyce was a wonderful person and I will miss her. I remember the time when Jay & Kelly got married. Joyce and I had the job of lighting candles. She lit one & I lit the other. We couldn’t remember if we should light the 3rd so we lit it. Then we remembered it was for the couple to light. We tried to discreetly put it out by blowing. Of course it wouldn’t go out at first & we were so nervous. We laughed about it often during the reception. She was a funny, thoughtful and kind person and will be missed.

So many good fun memories of my aunt Joyce. She was a huge influence in my life especially with humorous Laughter, Good times and Willie Nelson and don’t forget to go to church on Sundays. She was one of a kind, she was my aunt that I had spent many summers with as a child. She is missed; May she rest in peace
