Joe was our gentle giant. A cherished son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He loved his family and his dogs. He took great pride in his service to his country. Although we’re grieving, we take great comfort in knowing he’s at peace. U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Div. 508th PIR “Fury From the Sky”

I met Joe when we both happened to be training at a muay thai gym in Phuket, in 2011. I'm not a fighter, but I was attracted to the physical challenge of training multiple times a day, so spent a couple of weeks training in Chalong. I remember sitting there, at the opening BBQ of a new muay thai gym, and somehow got talking to Joe. He was thoughtful, and was different to many of the fighters and partiers that night, much more genuine. He wanted to lose a few pounds so he could fight at a lower weight class, and I thought I could use the added challenge, so with Joe leading the way, and another student at the gym, we began jogging early in the mornings, before our first gym workout, as added cardio. He introduced me to Indian runs, where everyone ran single file, and the last person in line had to step it up a notch and pass all the others and reach the front, whereupon the process would begin again. I still remember him saying (forgive the crudeness) "I like to look at my reflection when I pass a window. If I look like a p*ssy, I speed up." I still tell myself that on my runs, and always think back to him, nearly 10 years later. What struck me about Joe was that for all his impressive physical gifts, there was something all too kind and considerate about him. We'd shoot the breeze, and give each other a hard time, but never with any ill will or cruelty. I was always privately appreciative of his treating me like an equal, even though he’d clearly seen a lot more of the world, and was some years older than myself, let alone a much better fighter. I remember that the first couple of days of training had left my feet raw from the gym floor, and I'd mentioned it to Joe. After our workout, he'd taken me to the pharmacy, explaining what type of gauze and bandages and disinfecting tinctures to get. He also taught me how to drain blisters with a string and needle, and with a hypodermic needle and a drying agent. It may not seem like much, but he went out of his way to help, and it was more than most would've done. I still use these methods, and recently took care of a series of blister that my girlfriend had developed in the same way, thinking back to Joe, and grateful to him. We kept in touch briefly after I left Thailand, all through Facebook, but eventually he seemed to have deleted his account. I've thought back to him every so often, and searched for him online, hoping to reconnect. I'm terribly sorry to hear about his passing, and I hope that the respect and gratitude that a stranger like me feels towards him, many years on and after spending less than a week in his company, is a testament to his immense character.

The Washington Post, by Greg Laurie, Senior Pastor, Harvest Churches, California & Hawaii on the untimely death of Jarrid Wilson, one of his pastors. November 29, 2019 ...Some may wonder, “Why couldn’t Jarrid just snap out of this slump?” Just because we cannot see depression, it doesn’t mean it’s not a physical illness. We wouldn’t ask the relative of a deceased cancer patient, “Why couldn’t he just snap out of his cancer?” He did his best. You did your best. We did our best. Wish science had figured things out in time to save him.

Dearest family-I just spent some special time viewing the beautiful pictures of Joe and all of you. My heart was touched deeply again of all the love that was shared between you. It’s been over two months now since Joe’s Memorial and with each passing day your heart continues to hold onto the sweet memories and God’s love and promises of Eternity. May this Blessed hope give you the peace Joe would have wanted for you.

That was a lovely service. Thank you for sharing all those pictures with those of us who didn’t get to see him in other settings. His beautiful spirit always showed through in his smile and I will always remember him smiling. Even when he was having a rough time, he’d try to muster a smile when anyone greeted him. So it was wonderful to see all those pictures of him smiling throughout the years and to see him with those he cared about, see how close he was to his family, and see him with friends and as a soldier. I work on the inpatient unit, but also saw him in the halls when he would be here for outpatient care and we always spoke and like I said, he pretty much always smiled. It sounds like he remembered everyone he interacted with here, veterans and employees alike, and greeted them as warmly as he could. I think it’s safe to say he was a favorite at the VA and will be missed. One thing mentioned a few times was thanks for the hard work of the VA; true, but he truly worked hard too. Thank you for including us. May time grant you peace.

OMG! Word cannot express how my heart feels. My deepest sympathy to the Family. He was just that a "Gentle Giant". Very respectful and always smiling. I'm a clerk and some Veterans only remember you when you at check in. This man no matter where I was cafeteria, canteen, walking down the hall, and even on the outside of the VA, he would make my day by saying, "Hello Shonja. The nice lady from the 6th floor." Man I am truly going to miss his greeting. He will be forever in my heart. RIP GG (Gentle Giant).
