Jose Ignacio Martinez, 88, beloved father, died peacefully on Sunday July 24th, just 4 days shy of his 89th birthday. Ignacio, as he was known, was born in Santa Cruz to Manuelita and Patricio Martinez. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Ramona Lopez Martinez. He is survived by their 5 children and their families; Elias Martinez and Olivia from Santo Niño, Cecilia Martinez from Aurora, Colorado, Emilio Martinez and wife Magda from Litteton, Colorado, Gene Martinez and wife Lorena from Sombrillo, and Patricia Martinez Strong and husband Mark from Albuquerque. He was a World War II Veteran, having served with the Army Air Corps working on aircraft in the Pacific Islands. After his military service, he retired from the State of New Mexico as a state inspector in 1987 and from Los Alamos (ZIA and LACI) as a plumber/pipefitter. He was a lifetime member, just recently achieving 65 years of membership, of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 412. Ignacio was an avid swimmer and loved getting up early to start his day with a good swim and then go relax at home, making his mañana, and working on his puzzles in the newspaper. A public visitation was held Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Rivera Family Funeral Chapel in Espanola. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the Santa Cruz United Methodist Church with interment followed at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full Military Honors.

I will always cherish that my Tio Ignacio would read the Psalm's prayer to my dad when he would come over to visit my dad the last few days before my dad passed. I am sure that they are both reunited again! My thoughts are with all of you during this time. Love, Betty

Ignacio was my Mom's first cousin. He was faithful in paying her visits in her old age and helped her in whatever ways he could. I enjoyed our chats when he was at Mom's. I hadn't seen him for quite a while and I am saddened to hear that he has died. May Our Lord Jesus Christ send all of you peace and comfort.

To me childhood memories are the most important because they have the most impact in shaping your adult life. My Tio “I” was always about Education; not only for his children, but his nieces and nephews. I last saw my Tio “I” at my Dentist office in White Rock in April. When he recognized me, he gave me that big, beautiful grin that only he could give. I was surprised that we had the same Dentist; however, I was even more surprised to hear that my Tio “I” drove himself there. He proceeded to ask me about my brother, Ernie & family and my sister, Betty & family. In turn, I surprised him when I told him that I completed my B.S. degree in Computer Science. He gave me the biggest “bear” hug I had ever received. He spoke of his family and you could see the twinkle in his eyes when he spoke of each one of them. His passing will not only leave a void in our lives but in the hearts of everyone who knew him. My Tio “I’s” memory will always remain in my heart, and I will always cherish the fact that God spoiled me by giving me such a wonderful Tio.
