Emotion isn't something that anybody owns.

Jonathan Tiersten was an actor, musician, and tennis director whose creativity and warmth touched everyone who crossed his path. Born on August 11, 1965, in Queens, New York, and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, he showed an artist's instincts from childhood — studying French horn and guitar before his teenage years were through. He trained as a method actor at New York University's Circle in the Square Theatre School, where he studied alongside future stars Adam Sandler and Molly Shannon, and made his screen debut in 1981 with an uncredited role in the NBC soap opera "Another World." At just 18 years old, Jonathan landed the role of Ricky Thomas in Robert Hiltzik's "Sleepaway Camp" (1983), a raw, kinetic performance that would become a defining moment of cult horror cinema. The film earned him recognition including an award at the Macabre Faire Film Festival, and its devoted fan base only grew with each passing decade. "It is amazing to be remembered for something you were a part of," he would later say. "It doesn't matter when you did it." The 1990s saw Jonathan reinvent himself in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he fronted bands including Bambi's Apartment and Ten Tiers, released the acclaimed solo album "Heaven" (1998), and opened The Mountain Tap Tavern — a live music venue that made history as the site of David Gray's first North American appearance. He described himself on social media simply as "Actor, Musician, Tennis Director, Philosopher, Father (most important)," and every word of it was true. In 2008 he returned to acting, reprising Ricky Thomas in "Return to Sleepaway Camp" and embarking on a prolific run in independent cinema. His portrayal of serial killer John Doesy in "The Perfect House" (2012) earned him three Best Actor awards at film festivals. His final film appearance came with "Time's Up" in 2022. Jonathan also held certification as a USPTA tennis professional, and from March 2022 until his death he served as Director of Tennis for Maplewood Township, overseeing a program of roughly 500 students and more than 30 instructors — even naming the program's mascot "Dropshot" the squirrel, with the credo "Focus is Fun and Fun is Focus." Above all, Jonathan cherished his role as a father. He passed away on June 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of genuine kindness, artistic courage, and the simple, enduring belief that "emotion isn't something that anybody owns."

People who met him once at a convention remembered him years later. Not because he was famous, but because he actually talked to them. He remembered faces. He treated strangers like they were worth his time. He was always kind and full of life.
