His co-working colleagues from Office Nomads are planning to gather safely in his memory at Volunteer Park on Tuesday, June 23rd at 5 pm at the South Lily Pond in Volunteer Park (it's the one closest to the water tower). They'll be there for 20-30 minutes if anyone wants to join us. We are asking everyone to please wear a mask. Folks can call Susan directly if they need help finding the location - 206-484-5859.

Office Nomads Gathering for Jonathan: Time TBD

Please join us in remembering Jonathan and celebrating his life. Jonathan's memorial will be held online via Zoom. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be a program led by Seattle Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher Tuere Sala from 11am - 12pm. We will open the Zoom call at 10:45am so everyone can have time to join the call, make sure their technology is working, and enjoy a slideshow of photos of Jonathan with music. After the program, we will also leave the Zoom call open for any who wish to stay and share stories or memories of Jonathan. Please feel free to attend wearing whatever you feel most comfortable in (Jonathan never enjoyed dressing up!). You can use this link to attend the memorial, using the password "jonathan": https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86711475315?pwd=SW1ucFJ2VG13QlU4Q3EvaXRMRUZmUT09 This is the program for the service: Jonathan Mark's Memorial Ceremony June 20, 202011:00AM - 12:00PM Seattle, WA Opening Bell Welcome Tuere Sala, Officiant The Quiet Listeners by Laura Foley Go into the woods and tell your story to the trees. They are wise standing in their folds of silence among white crystals of rock and dying limbs. And they have time. Time for the swaying of leaves, the floating down, the dust. They have time for gathering and holding the earth about their feet. Do this. It is something I have learned. How they will bend down to you so softly. They will bend down to you and listen. Celebration of Life (Eulogy) Ian Lance Taylor Holly Davis Borrero Irene Marie Sakson "The Way It Is" by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer. Over and over we break open, we break and we break and we open. For a while, we try to fix the vessel-as if to be broken is bad. As if with glue and tape and a steady hand we might bring things to perfect again. As if they were ever perfect. As if to be broken is not also perfect. As if to be open is not the path toward joy. The vase that's been shattered and cracked will never hold water. Eventually it will leak. And at some point, perhaps, we decide that we're done with picking our flowers anyway, and no longer need a place to contain them We watch them grow just as wildflowers do-unfenced, unmanaged, blossoming only when they're ready-and mygod, how beautiful they are amidst the mounting pile of shards. Ritual of Impermanence All things are impermanent They arise and pass away To be one with this truth Brings happiness Saying Good-Bye We will now all say good-bye to Jonathan. When you hear your name called, simply say "Good-bye Jonathan". Lovingkindness Chant May you be filled with Lovingkindness May you be well May you be peaceful and at ease May you be happy Closing Bell* *This Zoom Call will remain open for anyone wishing to stay and share stories or memories of Jonathan

Jonathan Mark

Jonathan Henry Mark of Seattle, Washington died at home on June 1, 2020 after almost two years of living with glioblastoma. He was 56. Jonathan was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His love of computer programming started in seventh grade when he and his friends taught themselves to code, and he often said that a true developer was someone who codes whether or not you pay them. After graduating from Harvard University in 1986, he and his roommate drove across the country to work at Microsoft, which still had the feel of a startup. Jonathan worked as a Software Engineer and Development Lead at Microsoft for many years, and later transitioned to community activism and technical volunteer work for nonprofits. Jonathan was incredibly smart, endlessly kind, and had an amazing ability to form community wherever he went. He lived by his convictions, and his concern about climate change led him to bicycle everywhere, avoid long showers, and avoid airplane travel except to visit family. Jonathan was a regular practitioner at the Seattle Insight Meditation Society and loved live music, bicycling, gardening, sailing, belt sushi, and espresso. He met his glioblastoma diagnosis and subsequent illness with curiosity, grace, bravery, acceptance, and gentle humor. His family and friends will remember him for his kindness, playfulness, generosity, and courage to pursue what he felt was right. Jonathan is survived by his wife of 30 years, Donna Sakson, his daughter Irene Sakson, and his sister Jessica Mark Welch. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Joan Mark. Burial will be private and the family is planning to hold an online memorial on June 20, 2020. For information, please visit https://www.gatheringus.com/memorial/jonathan-h-mark/3913. Donations in Jonathan's memory can be made to Give Directly ( https://www.givedirectly.org/ ).
