Jon Morris

Jon Nicholson Morris was a man built for the game he loved — a fierce, technically gifted center who became one of the foundational pillars of professional football in New England. Born on April 5, 1942, in Washington, D.C., Jon grew up in a household shaped by intellectual rigor; his father, John D. Morris, was a distinguished reporter and editor in the Washington bureau of the New York Times. A three-sport athlete at Gonzaga College High School, Jon excelled at football, basketball, and baseball, earning the News Scholastic Sports Association Outstanding Athlete of the Year honor in 1960.

At the College of the Holy Cross, where he starred from 1961 to 1963, Morris emerged as one of the finest linemen in the region. He was a three-time starter at center and linebacker, won Lineman of the Year and Varsity Club Athlete of the Year honors in 1963, and captained the team in his senior season — a foreshadowing of the leadership he would carry into the professional game.

In 1964, both the AFL's Boston Patriots and the NFL's Green Bay Packers drafted him. Jon chose Boston — drawn by a conversation with coach Mike Holovak and the prospect of law school in the city — and that decision shaped a franchise. Over 11 seasons, he was an immediate full-time starter, earning six AFL All-Star selections from 1964 through 1969 and the 1970 Pro Bowl selection, making him the first Patriot ever named to the Pro Bowl after the AFL-NFL merger. In 1966, the Associated Press named him first-team All-AFL center, a remarkable distinction given the competition of that era. He played in 130 regular season games for New England, starting 125, and was later named to both the All-Time AFL second team and the Patriots' 50th Anniversary Team.

After a trade to the Detroit Lions, where he earned the team's Most Valuable Player honor in 1977, Jon closed his 15-year playing career with the Chicago Bears in 1978. He then returned to New England as a radio color commentator for the Patriots from 1979 to 1987 before moving into NFL analysis for NBC television. In retirement, he started a food brokerage business and settled in Belfair and Chevy Chase, Maryland, where he indulged lifelong passions for Civil War history, theology, and biography.

In 2011, Jon was named the inaugural inductee to the Patriots Hall of Fame by the organization's newly formed senior selection committee — an honor he called "the crowning achievement of my football life." He is survived by his wife, Gail. Jon Morris died on October 15, 2026, at age 84, remembered always for his toughness, dedication, and pride.
