John Achenbach
November 23rd, 1955 - December 31st, 2020
November 23rd, 1955 - December 31st, 2020
John Mark Achenbach, 65, of Thousand Oaks, passed away on December 31, 2020 after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
John was born on November 23, 1955 to William and Marian Achenbach in Los Angeles, CA. John met his wife, Denise, in 1977. They married in 1979 and went on to have two children, Mark and David.
In addition to being an adoring husband, father, and grandfather (Papa), John also loved spending time with family and friends, camping, reading, and telling unapologetically terrible puns. He never failed to light up a room and loved nothing more than sharing a laugh with everyone around him.
He is survived by his mother (Marian), wife (Denise), sons (Mark and David), daughters-in-law (Janelle and Elaine), grandchildren (Ella, Ian, and Luke), brothers (Michael, Jim, and Steven), sisters (Susan Abbath and Kathy Cooper), and several nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed, but we take comfort knowing we will be reunited with him in Heaven someday.

Dear Denise and Family, I met John when I was around 19 years old. I went to a Bible study he had. I believe it was in his home. He told his testimony how he came to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He also loved the Lord with all his heart , mind, soul, and strength. You could see the love he had for the Lord on his face. Every time I saw him over the years he always had a big smile on his face. He was kind, warm, compassionate, friendly, toward everyone he came in contact with. He loved his neighbors as himself. He loved you Denise and his wonderful family. He read believed and lived by the Word of God. John is where we all long to be one day with our Lord and Abba Father. May the Lord give you and your loved peace, comfort, and joy knowing that John is enjoying everlasting life. In his new incorruptible body. Praise the Lord for His Word and promises. Love in Christ, Jane, Chuck, and Family.

Here's a shot of John in the 70s, smiling as ever, at the wheel of his new project: an old brown car (I was too young to remember what make) that he turned into a majestic metallic blue. I can only imagine the jokes cracked through the following years from that drivers seat. It reminds me of the joy of John. All my love, thoughts and prayers to Aunt Marian, Denise, Mark and David and the whole family.

I met John when my family first moved to CA and he and my cousin Denise were dating. I never forgot how John would refer to Disneyland/Magic Kingdom as DismalLand/Tragic Kingdom. It always made me laugh!

The Achenbach family (John, Denise, Mark and David) were a positive part of my life growing up and being homeschooled together with his kids and attending the same church for some time. He was an amazing example of a great father and husband. I am so sad to hear of his passing but know his family is of strong religious faith and I hope his positive impact on all he knew is remembered and celebrated. We will all miss you and be inspired by how you lived your life and helped those around you.

I just have to share this memory of my loving friend. After our granddaughter, Ella was born we were together. He put his arm around my shoulder and said he was so happy to be "co-grandfathers" with him. Flash ahead to the day Luke was born. I had decided to dedicate my day to Ella so she wouldn't feel unimportant with the birth of her little brother. We went out to lunch, played at the park, and went for frozen yogurt. In between, we made multiple stops at the hospital to see mom, dad, Grammy, Mimi, and Papa John. After dinner, I put Ella to bed. By the time Luke was born, Ella was fast asleep. I just figured that I would see Luke the next morning. Sometime around 9:30pm or so, the grandparents were allowed in to see their new grandchild. John instantly held Luke and took some photos. He then handed Luke over and instantly called me. I'll never forget this call, "Tom, you've got to come see him! I'm on the way!" He promptly drove to my home to stay with Ella so I could see our grandson as soon as possible. This is just one example of the selfless love I was blessed to share with John.

I first met John about 24 years ago as I was friends with his son Mark. John was always the fun, loving and hilarious Dad that all of us kids loved growing up. I have a lot of great memories with him, but one of my favorites was when we were driving to Mexico on a mission trip, and he randomly bonked our friend James Kappen on the head. James asked why he did that, and John said, "Well, the sign says 'Bump Ahead'". We were all cracking up! John always had such a joy about him that was contagious, and he will truly be missed. I look forward to seeing him and laughing with him in heaven some day. Until then, my friend.
