Joe Wayne Hendrix, 76, of Chandler, Texas returned to his heavenly home on December 24, 2020 after a seven-year struggle with Lewy Body dementia and Parkinson's Disease. Joe was born in Dyess, Arkansas in May 1944 to Ben and Narvia Hendrix. He grew up in Grand Prairie, Texas, where he met his bride and wife of 55 years, Carolyn (Stone) Hendrix. Joe served in the Navy Reserves during the Vietnam War. He spent much of his career as a self-employed air conditioning repairman but had his greatest success in real estate, buying and selling houses and managing rental properties with Carolyn. Joe had a great sense of humor and continued cracking jokes for as long as he could speak. He was kind-hearted and mild-mannered. He loved to play dominoes and usually won. He attended First Methodist Church in Chandler, and his last outing when he could still drive was going to play dominoes at the church. Joe was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ben and Narvia Hendrix, and three of his siblings, Don, Vernon, and Velma Hendrix. Joe is survived by his wife, Carolyn Hendrix; brothers, David and Gene (aka Brother Bill) Hendrix; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tom Cherry; grandson, Joseph Cherry; and granddaughters, Carlin and Krista Cherry. Uncle Joe loved his 20 nieces and nephews, who grieve his loss as well. The family is holding a virtual memorial service on Zoom in honor of Joe, details to follow. All are invited to participate. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Joe's honor to God's Open Hands, food pantry and thrift store in Chandler TX, by mailing a check to: God's Open Hands, PO Box 865, Chandler TX, 75758, or using the link on this Memorial Page through Gathering Us to make a credit card donation. A Bible verse that fits Joe well is Matthew 5:5 (NIV): "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

We are going to miss you Uncle Joe. You were a fierce competitor on the domino table and never missed an opportunity to shake those bones. You were also crazy good at chess - I still remember you and dad battling out for what seemed like hours. I have such fond memories of spending time over the summer break as a child at your house. I'll never forget the summer you took me to work with you. You tried to teach me about AC Repair and I really enjoyed it. Those attics get so hot in Texas!!! You were kind, gentle, soft spoken and a man of integrity. Love you Uncle Joe - say hi to uncle Harold and aunt Gin for me!

Irving Daily News called dad a hero for rescuing a man from a fire and standing on the gas line until the fire department arrived to turn off the gas.

Joe was my baby brother and instrumental in getting me a job at Texas Instruments where I stayed for 18 years. From there, he went into the A/C business, but we managed to take a lot of trips together and enjoy each other's company. He will be greatly missed.
