May Jerry Goran Rest in Peace among the stars.

Treasured Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Friend, Gerald “Jerry” Steven Goran, 80, of Fountain City passed away on November 10, 2020. Jerry will be remembered in the hearts of his loved ones and will forever be a part of the Mississippi River Valley.

Jerry was born on May 21, 1940 to Steven and Helen Goran. As a child Jerry travelled with his Mom and Dad all over the country sightseeing and visiting National Parks. He often shared stories of proud moments of his father. Jerry met Mary “Kathy” Kathleen Casey in highschool, they spent time getting to know each other strolling through State Fair Park with Jerry’s dog Bonnie. The young couple tied the knot on September 10, 1960. Soon after, they grew their family with three children Debbie (John) Bartz, Craig Goran, and Lori (Mark) Anderson. Jerry worked long hours at Teleview Electronics in Cudahy Wisconsin to provide for his family. Jerry had a passion for woodworking, pheasant hunting, and spending time with family and friends over a cold one. Whenever the family had a chance to get away they packed their bags and went camping at Merrick State Park in Fountain City, Wisconsin.

Eventually Jerry and Kathy purchased a cottage on the edge of the park. Jerry spent countless hours on the Mississippi River with family, friends, and anyone who wanted to grab a lawn chair and a beer, eager to share his love for the river. You could often find him driving up and down the Mississippi with his dogs and beloved wife enjoying the views and wildlife. When the sun went down Jerry could be found sitting around the fire or gazing at the stars pointing out constellations. Over the years the boats, people, and dogs on the sandbar doubled and tripled as his family and friends grew. With that came four grandchildren Rachel (Mike) Dumke, Sarah (Joe Kelly) Goran, Alex Anderson, and Zach Bartz and three great grandchildren Killian Kelly, Loralei Kelly, and Eli Dumke. Jerry and Kathy always welcomed their grandkids - watching them during the workdays, having weekend sleepovers, and memorable weeklong vacations at the cottage.

Jerry retired at the age of 62 and soon after designed and built a cozy home on their cottage property. On a sunny morning you would be sure to find him target shooting at the range with his wife and dog. Jerry was a proud volunteer for The Merrick State Park Turtles and The Fish and Wildlife Life Service, earning volunteer of the year for Fish and Wildlife in 2010. Some of his volunteer activities included keeping the sandbars clean, monitoring eagle nests in the spring, maintaining bluebird houses, seasonal park events, and cutting firewood with his son for the park. The woodsplitter at Merrick has been named Jerry in honor of his helpful spirit.

Jerry had a warm smile, making all feel welcome. He walked through life with pride, perseverance, and strong love, instilling those values in his children and grandchildren. If help was ever needed Jerry was the first to lend a hand and share his never ending knowledge. Jerry Goran’s hugs will always be remembered by his strong embrace and heartfelt squeeze. His presence will be missed every day.

The family invites you to light a candle with them in honor of Jerry’s memory on Thursday, November 19 at 6:00 PM. We have created this memorial page, we ask that you leave a tribute message to share your love and memories of Jerry. Our sincerest condolences to Jerry's family. We've known Jerry about 27 years. From just getting to know Jerry, Kathy, Craig, Debbie, Lori and their families on the river to building his home and other projects. Jerry always took the time to chat and it didn't matter if it had to do with building, but he also took the time to ask about how your family was doing. If Jim wasn't home it didn't matter, he would always make time for me as well. We are going to miss seeing them passing us by in their boat, the river won't be the same without you Jerry.

Jerry was the best grandfather-in-law I could have ever asked for and more! His love was endless and his admiration for the people and things he loved knew no bounds. I am so thankful to have known such a great man and to have had so many lifelong memories with him. I will never forget our first adventure on the Mississippi in our new boat with Jerry by our side. To this day I still swear he was more excited for us than we were ourselves! He took so much pride in helping us launch and retrieve and being there for our first voyage. Jerry was always there for us whatever we needed and you could always hold a Jerry stamp of approval to the highest regards. If Jerry said “you’ve gotta get it” by all means you took that suggestion to the bank! The river will never be the same without Jerry but I am so thankful that some of my first and most memorable moments on it were shared alongside him! We love you Jerry and will miss you more than words could ever say.

I don’t know where to start but some of my VERY best memories of being a teenager included Jerry. The wonderful parties he and Cathy had at their house in Milwaukee, Camping trips, boating on the Mississippi and learning how to ski. He always treated me with such kindness. He was such an SPECIAL man.

The greatest compliment we can give to Jerry, “he was a good man” We will always remember Jerry, Kathy and their dogs boating on the Mississippi River. His white hair and great smile such a happy vision. Jerry was always willing to stop and talk or offer help when you needed it. We will miss our visits on his back deck as we talked about everything from bugs to guns to the beautiful pictures he took to Packers. Till we meet again dear friend.

I feel out of words but you know how special you are to me Grandpa. I miss you so much. I feel so lucky and proud to be your granddaughter. I keep feeling so in awe that I got you as MY grandpa. I miss your hugs, I miss being able to call and talk to you, I just miss you. Thank you for always taking care of us and for giving me so many little things to remind me of you, like your sand bar umbrella and boat wax - I promise to never use any other kind, it really is the best wax. I am so happy you got to meet Eli, I wanted to give you a grand baby so bad. I wish we had more time, I don't think it ever would have felt like enough but I have so many wonderful memories to look back on, thank you for giving me that. I don't think theres a better grandpa out there. I miss you, I love, and you are in my heart ever day. Thanks for being my wonderful Grandpa.

My heart breaks, as I hear of the passing of Jerry. I am Jerry and Kathy's mail carrier in the park. I will miss stopping and delivering packages to them, as he always had a big smile on his face and we got to chat about going on the river. Jerry was always concerned the packages were too heavy for me, not worry Jerry, I am a farm-girl. RIP Jerry and hugs to you Kathy, he will definitely be missed.
