Loved Ones

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerald Leonard Mercer on October 10, 2024. He was 68 years old.

Jerald was born on December 25, 1955, and reared in a military family, which instilled in him a spirit of adventure and resilience. He traveled extensively during his childhood, spending his high school years in Japan. Right after graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, where he dedicated himself to serving his country. Through hard work and determination, he put himself through college and became an officer, achieving his dream of becoming a fighter pilot, flying the F-4 Phantom II.

After his military service, Jerald continued his passion for aviation as a commercial pilot for Delta Air Lines, where he inspired many with his skill and dedication. His career allowed him to travel the world, visiting countries such as Argentina, Chile, China, Colombia, India, Mexico, South Africa, and various destinations across Europe, including Italy, France, and Spain. These experiences enriched his life, and he would always describe his visits in great detail which made his friends and family feel like they traveled the world with him.

A man of many passions, Jerald also had a deep love for sailing. He immersed himself in learning everything he could about sailboats, often attending sailboat shows with his family and embarking on memorable sailing trips that brought him immense joy and a sense of freedom on the water.

Jerald called Paradise, Texas, home, where he embraced the joys of ranch life, raising goats, pigs, chickens, and cows. In Paradise, he formed many cherished friendships within a tight-knit community, often speaking fondly of the bonds he built there.

His greatest pride was his two children, Adrienne and Adam, who were the light of his life. Jerald believed it was his duty to pass down the knowledge that he accumulated in his life, and even home schooled Adam and Adrienne from their 5th grade through high school. He taught his children every skill he could, from handyman tips to changing a tire, history, survival skills, budgeting, and so much more. Everything that happened in the day was an opportunity to give a lesson. Preparing his children for adulthood was foremost in his mind.

After retiring, Jerald moved to Florida, where he continued to share his warmth and love with his family. He spent his days alongside his siblings, mother, and extended family, welcoming his children and grandchildren for many happy visits. For the past three and a half years, Jerald lived at Grand Brook Memory Care at Twin Creeks in Allen, Texas, where he could be near his daughter and granddaughter, and where he shared many treasured memories with family and new friends. He was very happy there and was proud to call it home.

Jerald is survived by his children, Adam (married to Mark) and Adrienne; his grandchildren, Brooke and Luke; and his four loving sisters Glenda Crawford (married to David), Alice Fowler, Rebecca Bryan, and Carolyn Pollock (married to Lyle). He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Lillian, and brother, Duane.

Jerald will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, dedication to family, and unwavering kindness. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Because Jerald's family and friends are dispersed around the world, there will be no in-person memorial service; instead, we invite you to share your stories, wishes, and photos in a Tribute below. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to do what Jerald would love—connect with the community around you and get to work or donate to support those in need.

Rest in peace, Jerald. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

It’s hard to put into words just what Jerald meant to me. He was more than a brother-in-law but closer to my friend. There were times that we were together and we thought so much alike that we could just smile at each other and we knew what the other was thinking. One little story: Years ago, around 1974 Jerald drove me to the airport in Tampa where April, age 3, and I were flying to NC to be with my parents while Duane was doing his National Guard duty for 2 weeks. We were talking and enjoying the drive and missed the turn into the airport. We had to drive all the way across the bridge and the bay to get back and he was so embarrassed but I tried to tell him it was fine!! He was sure we would miss our flight and then everyone would know what we had done. We talked about it for years and he never could forget. Anytime someone would talk about flying into Tampa, we could look at each other and laugh ! It’s funny that aviation became such a big part of his life after that. I do have a regret, and that is that the brothers didn’t have more time together. When they did find each other again after some time, they could talk for hours about just everything and I’m happy for that. But now, we know they are going to be able to talk all they want and catch up to all the years they missed. I loved Jerald so much, and am happy for his life and the way ours intertwined together with this precious family. I will miss his beautiful smile and that heart-felt laugh. And his tender heart when talking about his babies! We are all blessed for having known this sweet man!

So many treasured memories of my brother! Snippets of our lives and traveling the world imbedded in my mind and they all warm my heart. And even though we have lived most of our adult lives far apart he has always been and will always be a part of me! I love you Brother♥️

Seeing my Uncle Jerald was always a treat! When I’d hear that he was in town as a kid I’d always be a bit more excited to get out to Grandma and Grandads house that Sunday. He had such an encouraging way about him, a contagious smile and a playful side, often joining in our games of kickball, baseball, football, or whatever sport we chose to play in the yard that day. And if he wasn’t on the field he was cheering from the sidelines, always spreading joy and love for his kids and his many nieces and nephews. I must have told hundreds of people over the years that my Uncle was a pilot for Delta, that he flew the F-4 when in the Air Force, I always looked up to him and admired him. I’ll miss him dearly. To my Aunts and Uncles and to my cousins whom I haven’t seen in far too long, Adam and Adrienne especially, I love you guys. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It is so difficult to let go, even when you know that the pain and suffering are no more. I know that both of our fathers are now reunited, not only with each other but with their mother, their father and our Heavenly Father and so many others. I feel them smiling and looking down on us all, encouraging us to keep moving forward and spreading the love and joy and the Word to as many as we can until we meet them again one day in Heaven. All of my Love, and that of my wife Paige, and our children, Lynley and “little” Duane III

Jerald was my big brother. I can’t remember a time when we weren’t “together”, no matter the miles separating us or the time between visits. We had a friendship that continued thru adulthood right up until the morning he passed. If I ever needed him he was right there, he was truly my best friend. Jerald seemed to know the course of his life and it pretty much played out just as he planned. Sure, there were bumps in the road but from start to finish he lived life on his terms and he knew his journey was not over when he left this earth. He threw his heart into everything he did but his greatest joy was watching his children, Adrienne and Adam, become the adults they became - they were his everything. Our loss cannot be measured in days, months or years – the void will be felt until the day we meet him again. He has now embarked on a new adventure that we can only dream about! If you need to find Jerald, just look to the stars – he will be the brightest. I miss you brother! Until we meet again – all my love.

Adam and Adrienne, Mark, Luke and Brooke, Sending you so much love tonight as I think about all the sweet memories I have of Uncle Jerald. As far back as I can remember, he was always one of the kindest, gentlest souls I knew; the ‘cool’ uncle who was always game for playing with us kids, always laughing, smiling, having fun! And even as the years passed, when distance didn’t allow us to see him as often, he would always still greet the now-grown me with the same kindness and smiles and warmth as if we hadn’t missed a day! I remember as a child (and an adult!) being so proud to say I had an uncle who was a pilot 😊 and always so impressed with the amazing job he did home-schooling you two and helping you to become the amazing people you are today. My heart feels so sad for the loss of an amazing dad, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle and brother, but so incredibly grateful for the time we had with him and the lives he was able to positively impact while he was here. Thanking God for Uncle Jerald and praying for your peace and comfort and happy memories today and all days ahead. Much love, April
