Jennifer Paes

The 1982 Asian Games opening ceremony in New Delhi — Jennifer captained the Indian women's basketball team at these Games.

The 1972 Munich Olympics, where Jennifer Paes competed for India in women's basketball — and where she first met Vece Paes.

Vece Paes and Leander Paes — Jennifer's husband and son, the two Olympic athletes whose lives she shaped and supported with quiet, fierce devotion.

Jennifer Paes (née Dutton) was a trailblazing Indian basketball player, Olympian, and proud mother whose quiet determination shaped not only the history of women's sport in India but the lives of everyone around her. Born on January 19, 1951, in Calcutta — now Kolkata — she came from a distinguished Anglo-Indian family whose roots ran deep into Bengali literary heritage. She was the great-granddaughter of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the pioneering nineteenth-century poet who introduced sonnets and blank verse to Bengali literature.

Jennifer attended Loreto House in Calcutta, where she was first drawn to organized sport at a time when female athletes in India faced scarce training facilities and prevailing expectations discouraging women from competition. She persevered with remarkable grace. Beginning in the late 1960s, she represented Bengal in national tournaments and became a cornerstone of the state team's dominance throughout the 1970s, helping lead Bengal to the Senior National Basketball Championship for women in 1970, 1972, 1974, and 1976.

Her finest hours on the international stage came as captain of the Indian national women's basketball team. She guided the squad at the 1980 FIBA Women's Asia Cup in Seoul and then led India at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, representing her country with distinction during a pivotal era of growing visibility for women's basketball. Though standing just five feet tall, she commanded the court with an authority that belied her stature.

It was at the 1972 Munich Olympics that Jennifer's personal life took its most fateful turn — there she met Vece Paes, an Olympic bronze medalist in field hockey. They married in 1973 in Calcutta, forming one of Indian sport's most remarkable dual-athlete partnerships. Together they raised three children: Leander, who would go on to become one of India's greatest ever tennis players with 18 Grand Slam titles and an Olympic bronze medal; and daughters Jacqueline and Maria.

Alongside her sporting life, Jennifer worked at ICI India Limited from 1967 to 1998, a commitment spanning more than three decades. In her later years, she channeled her fierce, unconditional love into supporting Leander's extraordinary career. She passed away on May 17, 2026, at the age of 75, just nine months after the death of her beloved husband Vece. She leaves behind a legacy as a pioneering athlete and a mother whose love and belief in her children was boundless.
