Dear Beth and family, I only got to know the sad news now but I hope you will accept my sincere condolences. I remember Jeff well when he visited often the Solomon Lab at Ceder Street, where both of us were working. Jeff had an infectious smile and was always in a good mood. Early on he made me welcome by speaking a few words in German with me. Probably the best memory was when Marc Kirschner gave a talk at Yale. After the talk, there was an event for students & postdoc to meet Marc and there were drinks and snacks. To my astonishment, the only people keen to meet Marc was Jeff and myself. Needless to say that we three had a wonderful conversation about science but also other topics. Although Jeff is not with us anymore, I am sure he looks down on all of us with a big smile and you probably can see him from far away. I wish you a lot of strength in these difficult times and hope that you and your children can live in Jeff's spirit also in the future. All the best, Philipp Kaldis

My warmest condolences to the Peterson-Egan family. I just heard the very sad news. I feel very blessed to have had Jeff in my life during my teens. I remember his kindness, his intelligence and creativity, his zest for live and his enjoyment of the little things. He touched my life in a big way and taught me a lot. The foto is from when visited the Netherlands. He will be remembered dearly overseas.

In this world there are men. Some only can be called and referred to as men. Some can be and earn the title of being called gentlemen. But there is an elite group that can be called a genteel Gentlemen’s gentlemen. Jeff Peterson was in that elite group. Everything about him, his persona, his character, his mannerism all defined and qualified him to be in this exclusive group. I will always remember and cherish the first time that I met Jeff. It was a thanksgiving dinner hosted by Beth, at her apartment on Livingston Street in New Haven, CT, which was not far from the campus of Yale University. I believe that it is where Jeff and Beth first met one another. In that first meeting, there were four things that immediately struck me about Jeff. His smile-always endearing; but slightly impish and devilish—it was sort of saying—if you are hungry-I know where they hid the cookie jar. His laugh was unique and short in staccato in nature. And when you heard it from another room—you knew that you missed out a great joke and guffaw. He was always quick to you engage you in conversation; catching up on what was new in your life or simply chatting about the mundane things-all with sincere and deep interest…but always respecting and never overstepping with intrusive questions. But, the most important thing that I saw in Jeff in that first meeting and have witnessed through out his life…is his love, zest, passion, and unending and boundless energy for what life can offer. Some people just allow the tide and current of life to take them along the way it wants to go and some are slightly more adventurous like surfers that allow the waves to push them to the shoreline. But Jeff was a hang glider, kite surfer, and wingsuit flyer always soaring higher and higher and further and further towards the horizon way above the tide and current of life…Jeff charted his own course. Today, I know that he is soaring high next the Lord’s angels in the heavens above us.

I have many wonderful memories of Jeff and many pictures. This one stands out to me since Jeff was so thrilled to be eating Eritrean food in Washington, DC. He was staying with us while looking into a clinical trial at NCI. Jeff's love of Eritrean food went back to New Haven and Boston where we would enjoy many meals together so we thought we would continue the tradition in DC. We had a great meal here in Keren, a restaurant in DC, and went back to our house where Mona and our kids were doing homework. Our youngest Julia had to learn spelling of some French words and Jeff offered to help her by saying the words out loud. He sat patiently as she spelled out the words. Typical Jeff-so kind and loving and patient. Afterwards, Jeff came back to DC a couple of weeks later to NCI and I called him to see if he would stay with us again. He said no they wanted him to stay onsite so the doctors could monitor him. When I protested- he said :"Yep, French homework will have to be done without me." I still smile at that phrase. So funny. So witty. So Jeff. Dear Beth, Sophie, Oliver, Jenn, Dr. Joe Peterson, and all the family and friends that loved Jeff-Mona, Anthony, Elsa, Julia, and I are very sorry for our loss. I know I am a better person for having known Jeff. Love, Nagi
