Obituary
On Monday, August 11, 2025, Jean Wilcox, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away at age 89. She will be deeply missed by her family, neighbors, and friends who knew her as a woman of great inner strength and abiding faith.
Eva Jean Wilcox (Fluharty) was born on May 16,1936 in Kooskia, Idaho where her adventurous parents, Dale and Eva Fluharty moved from Iowa to tame the land. She spent her early years in a one room log cabin with no electricity or running water. She inherited her parents’ strength and grit which came to define her.
Jean moved to Kirkland during her early school days where she excelled as a student and graduated as salutatorian from Lake Washington High School. She also applied herself to competitive shooting and as a teenager was the Washington State Jr. Champion.
Jean met her husband, Jack, at a summer party on Whidbey Island and they were married June 23, 1956. They moved to Whidbey Island in 1968 where raising their two sons, Randy and Ken, became the focus of her energy. When her sons showed an interest in skiing, she learned how to ski. When the church needed a youth group leader, she volunteered. She drove a school bus because she loved kids. She welcomed numerous foster children into her home. She also welcomed animals. From rescued crows to flying squirrels, if you could catch it without harming it, you could keep it as a pet.
Jean’s legacy as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother is treasured by her family. She was strong and loving and was more interested in our character than our success. She gave selflessly to others and expected her family to do the same, and she passed along her unwavering Christian faith which continues to bless her family.
Jean is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Jack; her brother Robert Fluharty; her two sons and their spouses, Randy and Yanyu, Ken and Nadine; four grandchildren, Laura (Matt) Tanaka, Emily Wilcox, Rachel (Kevin) Haffey, Greg (Ella) Wilcox; and three great grandchildren, Logan, Levi and Lucas Tanaka. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter-in-law, Sandy Seals Wilcox.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on October 3rd at 2pm at the Useless Bay Country Club on Whidbey Island.

Dear Jack, Randy, Ken & Family, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Jean better this last decade. I will remember her as one of the great‘ ‘dames’ of Sunlight Beach! She was always interested in others, quick to engage and flash a warm smile. Jean was a fastidious gardener, keeper of the road and watchful for speed limit breakers who were usually visitors or new to the road (like myself)! She taught me to slow down. I loved chatting with her while she was in her garden. Jeanne was quick to stop what she was doing and give you her full attention. I loved seeing on her bicycle, smiling, waving and greeting others on this street. Having already known her through stories from Sandy, I knew she was adventurous and strong. A sharp shooter, expert baker, and fiercely, independent and tenacious. She would need to be so to raise two boys. And she did it well, I might add. As I would learn later, she had parented many others as well. I know the lives of her children and grandchildren were the highlight of her life. I admired Jean’s strong faith, and know she was eagerly awaiting her passage home, long before it actually arrived. Even when things were painful, I know she took time to finish off the last bite of ice cream served at maple Ridge! Loved that! I can’t wait to see her on the other side. We will celebrate and enjoy the everlasting flowers and sunshine. God Bless you all as you mourn her loss. We will miss her dearly. And I know she will be remembered as one who finished well. I am richer for having known her! All my love, Crystal

How did you meet Jean?
Aunt Jean was a great aunt! Had so many special times spent with Aunt Jean. She was always such a very special person to me. She will be missed a lot! Looked forward to when Nadine and Aunt Jean would make a special trip to come to Machias and visit her brother Bob and me. They would always stop at Jakes for lunch before they would come to the house. Will miss those visits. Love you, Aunt Jean
