Loved Ones

Jean Virginia Borowsky (December 13, 1943- March 24, 2022) of Northridge, California died at age 78 after complications of a sudden heart arrhythmia.  She is survived by  her children, Alexander “Sandy” Borowsky, Elizabeth “Liz” Borowsky, and Peter Borowsky, and their families including eight grandchildren, Alex, Nick, Katie, Henry, Sarah, Miles, Ethan, and Dylan, as well her partner, Gary Swinhart, and her brother Dr. William “Mack” Petty.  Jean was enjoying a thriving and active life at the time of her passing.  Her days were filled with family and friends, tending to her garden (especially her roses), constant learning in her lifelong quest to master piano and painting, and volunteer work. She revered her grandchildren and loved sharing in their special moments – traveling as needed to share in person.  She treasured the laughs, companionship and love she found every day in recent years with Gary.

Jean was born in Texas in 1943 to Dr. William and Virginia Petty, and was raised in Santa Maria, California. She met and married Dr. Stephen A. Borowsky while in nursing school at LA County/USC where she earned an RN in 1966.  They moved often in the early years of their marriage, finally settling in Northridge in 1977 with their three young children. Jean and Steve shared 48 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and growth– balancing, challenging, and supporting each other through the years.  The family enjoyed wonderful times together, especially their summer trips camping and seeing nature throughout California and the west. Jean always had a special connection with the outdoors, forests, plants, and loved visiting botanical gardens throughout her life. Another constant theme in her life was learning.  She completed a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and a Masters in Public Administration at Cal State Northridge.  She served for many years as Director of School Nursing for the Simi Valley School District, enjoying the work and the service she did for the children of the district, even after Steve retired.  She was widowed in 2012, and retired in 2014.  Upon retirement, she sought out new challenges including learning to play bridge.  It was there she met Gary Swinhart, who was teaching the class, and after asking him out on a date, they went on to form a loving relationship that continued to grow until her passing.

Jean was a friend and mentor to all, especially her daughters-in-law Sandy and Kris and her son-in-law Neal Lindeman. This extended to her nieces and nephews, to her team at Simi Schools, and, in some part, to all who knew her.  She was loving, a bit too trusting, somewhat strong willed, but always kind and generous.  She brought her natural warmth and  empathy to every interaction.  She will be long remembered and dearly missed by all.

Donations in her honor can be made to the American Liver Foundation www.liverfoundation.org, or the Huntington Gardens www.huntington.org/donate.

From: Monica J. Johnson, Simi Valley, CA Jean was a remarkable woman with an indomitable personality! She made The world a better place. Many years ago I went through or deal with breast cancer and she was a great source of knowledge, wisdom, compassion and comfort. She left a permanent impression on my heart. She was so proud of her family. I know your pain of her loss must be unbearable. Let your memories of the wonderful times of family gatherings and photos lessen your pain. I will carry Jean in my heart forever. Sincerely, Monica

Jean was an awesome lady! I knew Jean from SVUSD. She was my school nurse for 22 years. Wherever I was, she was always the school nurse. I was so lucky to be able to know and love her. After retirement, she joined our retired SVUSD group for lunches, whenever she was not too busy. She led a full life! Jean will be sorely missed by me. She was a great friend!

Ron and I had a wonderful friendship, over many years, with Jean and Steve as in laws, and friends. And, more recently with Jean and Gary. What we remember most about Jean was her soft voice, kind disposition, and "can do" spirit. We shared many visits, meals, outings, and most importantly the marriage of Elizabeth and Neal. The arrival of our grandchildre, Henry and Sarah enriched our families. In our Sunday telephone chats we brought each other up to date on the adventures of children and grandchildren. We will miss all the laughs and walks and talks. With love to a dear friend. Tedda and Ron

From Cardiac Rehab: Borowsky Family, My name is Deanna, i’m the registered nurse who interviewed Jean a few weeks ago here at Cardiac Rehab. I was absolutely stunned and saddened to hear of her passing. She was such a pleasure. What a wonderful woman. I talk to her a lot about her family, she was so proud to talk about her family. I will miss her. My prayers go out to you all. Deanna Marek, RN I am one of the Cardiac Rehab nurses, and also your neighbor- I saw Jean and Cheryl walking many mornings past my house- I am so sad she was not with us long enough to help her. I put her monitor on her on the 18th, and she was so happy to finally be able to exercise with us- we talked about her job as a school nurse and seemed so happy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Susie Levy We are so sad to hear of Jean‘s passing. Although we only knew her short time, she was such a lovely fun lady. We feel grateful to have met her. Our thoughts are with you all. The Cardiac Rehab team, Stacey, Laura, Pam, Jeny, Nicole, Alane, Jannaz

Jean and I shared an office for over 20 years while working at the Simi Valley School District. She was the Director of Nursing and I worked as a School Psychologist. We had so many wonderful conversation. Jean was always such a caring person, concerned about others, and always there to help whenever needed. She was a good listener, and you always knew she would give you her honest opinion. I always enjoyed my time in the office, sharing our lives and learning about each other. She was a wonderful colleague and a good friend. She will be missed.

Jean has been my neighbor since our kids were young. However, our close friendship only began a few years ago when we became "walking partners". When you walk you talk. We shared many thoughts and opinions along the way. And, we shared her dog, Sasha. Eventually, Gary came into her life and we shared meals and jokes and fun. I will miss her terribly. Our last words were, "Have a nice week end. I'll see you Monday!" That will never be. My lovely friend will be with me in spirit. My deepest condolences to her family who will miss her deeply. She raised up some outstanding adults. And, she loved her grand kids and was so very proud of you all.
