Jason Panek
2023
2023
Jason Panek passed away on December 5, 2023. Jason worked as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner before becoming a professor of Nursing at Piedmont Virginia Community College and was the Interim Dean of the Nursing program this semester. He loved being a nurse and serving others, and he loved preparing students for this noble profession. He also loved Star Wars and amassed a large collection of action figures. He was an amazing dungeon master, a “Trekkie,” and a sci-fi enthusiast in general. If it was nerdy, he was into it.
His nerdy legacy lives on in his children Alice and Evelyn. He is also survived by his wife Megan, his mother Lynn Panek, father Alan Panek, his sister Jackie Braund, and his labradoodle Luke (named after Luke Skywalker, of course).
Jason quietly battled depression for most of his adult life. He believed strongly in breaking the stigma around mental illness. If you know anyone who is in crisis or suicidal, please call the Suicide and Crisis Hotline by dialing 988. You can also visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for more resources (https://afsp.org).
A private memorial service will be held in his home state of Wisconsin (GO PACKERS!). Please use this memorial page to post a funny anecdote or meme that reminds you of Jason (he was famous for sending silly memes). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Jason’s memory to the Region Ten Community Services Board using the link located below.

Today I went to get a flu shot in Milwaukee, and when I told the nurse I was a German professor at Carthage College she told me she had a friend who was my former student. Jason’s name immediately conjured images of a quiet friendly German student in a hockey jersey. I was so happy to hear from her about all that he had accomplished as a nurse, professor, administrator, and father. I’ll remember his humor (echoed in so many of the stories here), his passion, and his friendliness. My condolences to all those he left behind.

Jason was always a very good & kind person. He was kind to me on any project we worked on in school. I volunteer with BSA in Wisconsin Rapids for Troops 171/9171. I see his name on the troop Eagle board & always remember that he lived out many points of the Scout law, especially friendly & kind.

I was a caregiver for the girls, mostly Alice, in Waukesha Wisconsin. Jason was a very kind gentle attentive father. I felt so bad when I heard the news and know he will be missed. I was sad when the family moved away…..take care and God Bless. Patti Schutte

In the summer of 2022 the Panek family came to the dells for a few days. We went to Mt. Olympus where Jason, Alice, Evelyn, Carter, and my mom all went on Medusa's Wheel, it was so much fun. When we were done with that we went to Buffalo Phil's. In Buffalo Phil's there is a huge collection of Star Wars Lego sets. I swear, Jason must have been looking at those Lego's for at least 5 minutes pointing out all of the characters. Jason was the best Uncle, I couldn't have asked for a better uncle. I love you Jason ❤️
