Although we were members at Wallace for nearly 20 years it was in the last several years that I had the privilege to get to know Jan beyond a mere acquaintance. We bonded over issues of concern related to ethnicity and culture; she was a counselor for my middle son at WCA; she showed an interest in our ministry in East Asia and we were shocked and saddened to hear the news of her sudden home going. Jan has left an indelible mark on all of our lives at Wallace. She fought the good fight. She is enjoying the rest and the Lord she put her faith in.

We celebrate the life of our dear cousin, Janice, remembering our joyful times together. Fond memories come to mind; some from childhood and others from more recent times. When an opportunity presented itself to spend time with family, Janice embraced it. Here we are (Janice, Naomi, Mary, Vee and Rhonda) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in D.C, September 2016. We explored, learned, laughed and of course, afterwards shared family stories, photographs, and a meal— together. Today, I recall the chorus of a favorite hymn of our grandparents and her father—our uncle and cousin, Jonathan Beene, Sr. “Precious memories, how they linger. How they ever flood my soul. In the stillness of the midnight. Precious sacred scenes unfold. Precious memories fill my soul”. —J.B.F. Wright. To Janice’s children, siblings, family, and friends; we join you in cherishing her sweet spirit. Family is where life begins, and love never ends. Mary Beene, Rhonda Beene and Vee Critton.

As my daughter Elizabeth wrote below, Jan's influence on my life since coming to Wallace in 1985 and then also as a WCA parent was likewise broad and deep. Her consistent example of love for Christ and in Christ for others, her giving of herself to others in faithful teaching and many, many acts of service, and her consistent encouragement to grow and learn has influenced my life for the better in more ways than words can express. I thank God for having Jan's influence in my life.

As a young church-planting family, new to the D.C. area, Jan and Jay were one of the first African American PCA couples we met. Jan invited my husband to speak at Washington Christian Academy numerous times, and we made many friends in the area. Later, Jan agreed to be the speaker at our very first women's retreat. Jan continued to be an encouragement to young people as she served on the advisory board of Covenant College along with my husband and other leaders. Although her death was sudden, Jan lived her life very intentionally, serving and giving of herself at each pivotal opportunity. As a great role model for many, Jan was dearly loved, and she will be sorely missed.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Adams’ loving family, whom she adored. May she rest in paradise and may her remaining loved ones cherish the sweet memories. Mrs. Adams was a tremendous asset to Christian Education and the body of Christ. She represented the old guard, an old-school teacher and a no-nonsense approach. She was tough…but as the daughter and granddaughter of educators, I recognized and respected her approach. I have fond memories of her discussing her children and enjoyed long conversations with her about the importance of education. I also recall a remarkable presentation she facilitated on race-related issues at a WCA Society Meeting. Her comments were passionate and informed and her delivery was stellar. She shepherded her students and was adamant about making sure they were critical thinkers and strong self-advocates. Countless families are indebted to her as she was like a library of college readiness. For those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives, death isn’t the end. It’s another beginning. Death is but a passageway at God’s designated time for us to finally escape this broken world full of imperfections and be welcomed to the home we’ve been longing for our entire lives. (Revelation 21:4) Mrs. Laureece Hymes
