It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Waldroop of Brookline, MA, on October 5th at the age of 74.

Born to Rose and Dee Waldroop in Centralia, IL, Jim graduated from Rice University with degrees in psychology and film and received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Jim was devoted to helping others achieve their dreams and improve their futures, whether through his prescient career advice or his remarkable understanding of the human condition. In his professional life, he served first as a therapist and then as co-director of career development at Harvard Business School for nearly two decades before co-founding CareerLeader in 1990, which he ran until his passing. A gifted speaker and writer, Jim co-authored two books and numerous articles, and lectured at universities and business schools around the globe.

Liked by those who knew him casually and loved by those who knew him well, Jim drew others to him with his keen intellect, deep emotional intelligence, and humility–his editor once remarked that Jim was the first author to forgo contesting any changes made to his manuscript. In kind, he put his genuine openness to others to use as a therapist, friend, advisor, and father. His guidance was authoritative but not overbearing, empathetic but not sycophantic, and overflowing with authentic care and compassion. Your problems were Jim’s problems, and Jim was a born problem solver.

The primary problem Jim devoted himself to solving was one of self-actualization, of guiding others toward a deeper understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and in turn, toward more fulfilling careers and relationships. Jim was equally in awe of others’ successes and understanding of their failures, methodically collecting data on both over decades, and analyzing it and elucidating it through the business he made his life’s mission.

Outside of work, Jim’s manifold passions and hobbies led him on travels far and wide where he lovingly built collections of rare fossils, dictionaries, antiques, artifacts, artwork, and kitschy curiosities, with a library of books on any subject that spoke to him. He particularly loved classic rock and zydeco music, architecture and infrastructure, animals of all kinds, John le Carré mysteries, the Bird-Magic rivalry, a well-made BLT (“mighty tasty!”), and wits of all types, from Dave Barry to Bill Watterson to Phillip Pullman. Jim always wanted to know how things worked, be they human beings or the machines they made. His inquisitive nature and easy command of facts and factoids made him an effortless conversationalist, forging instant connections in every encounter and putting people at ease with his humor and his unmistakably genuine interest in their stories.

Jim is survived by Valerie Zimber, his wife of 38 years; and his sons Max and Daniel Waldroop. He is sorely missed.

Hi, Jim & Family! I am saying Hi, Jim, because I know you are out there somewhere, and I know that your CareerLeader Counseling has touched my life and continues to influence it. We consulted at the time of my 15th HBS Reunion in May 1998 and I enjoyed the work I did in preparation for our meeting and the meeting itself immensely. My career has undergone a series of metamorphoses but the one that stuck, in the end, was REALTOR in Sussex County, DE, down by the Atlantic Ocean near Bethany Beach. I was reviewing old "career analysis" work and came across the work I had done with you just now. And I wanted to call to thank you for your help. My appreciation stands even though you are no longer a phone call away to share it. Thank you for everything, Jim, until I see you again. My deepest condolences to your family and friends. I'm so saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I'll miss our intellectual discussions solving the worlds problems. I have so much admiration for how he dealt with the challenges he faced. He always asked about my sons - eager to help them professionally any way he could. He was so proud of his family. I will miss him.

Rest in peace Jim! I have been personally impacted by Jim and CareerLeader in so many ways. I still remember my training with him during the MBA Career Services Employer Alliance conference in Phoenix, AZ many years ago and also his training of staff at the University of Virignia around 2019. Jim, you have changed the world for the better and your legacy and impact will be felt for a very long time. Praying for his family and loved ones during this time.
