James – or, “Jim” – was born in Oceanside, NY, on Oct. 23, 1963, the son of Thomas Robarge Sr. and Joan Starr. His family eventually moved to the Hermon, NY, area, where Jim was often found sledding, building tree forts, or getting into mischief around town with his siblings and friends. He graduated from Middletown High School South in Middletown, NJ, in 1981. Following graduation, Jim served in the United States Navy from 1981 to 1985 and received training as an aviation electronics technician. He would go on to pursue a career in engineering at cogeneration power plants, and recently observed his 20-year anniversary as an employee of Calpine Corporation as a Turbine Engineer Specialist III. Jim pursued his hobbies and interests with incredible enthusiasm, from playing soccer, golf and basketball, to spending time outdoors. He loved riding his motorcycle, and even explored places like Cambodia and Thailand by bike. Jim also enjoyed camping and relaxing with the family dog, and was known to have the occasional cigar or glass of scotch alongside a James Bond or John Wayne movie. Most of all, Jim was best known for his sense of humor, sharp wit and for how much he enjoyed spending time with his friends. No matter where he went, Jim brought laughter to all those who knew him. But undoubtedly, Jim’s greatest joy in life were his two daughters, Briana and Nicole, whom he loved watching grow up. As a family, they shared countless family dinner nights, road trips and hours spent watching cartoons together (especially Bugs Bunny). Jim is survived by his two daughters Briana Robarge and Nicole Robarge of La Porte, TX, his father Thomas Robarge Sr. of Potsdam, NY, and his mother Joan Starr of Lehigh Acres, FL. He is also survived by his siblings Suzanne Desimone of Virginia Beach, VA, Thomas Robarge Jr. of Ogdensburg, NY, Jacqueline Robarge of Baltimore, MD, and Danielle Rusk of Atlanta, GA, three nieces and nephews, and his uncles and aunts Dan, Kathy, Terry and Pat, and several cousins.

A photo from one of my dads friends. It is wonderful to see how much he was loved and cared for by his friends and family.

I grew up friends with James and his brother Tom. I have such great memories of the Hermon Gang. We all had such fun. I wish that I could point out just one memory but there are too many to focus on one, Sledding, Halloween, or just hanging out. I remember James fondly and I know the lives he has touched are much better for knowing him.

Jimmy was a seventh grader when I started teaching music at Hermon-Dekalb Central School, in 1975. He played trumpet in band. He was never going to be Doc Severinsen, but he certainly carried his weight in the organization. Jim could always be counted on for finding an opportunity to add some levity to the rehearsal with a humorous comment or a prank. Even as a 13 years old, he had a very keen and dry sense of humor. His comments and antics added much to the energy and enjoyment of rehearsals and performances. I particularly recall an incident that happened when Jimmy was in 8th grade. Every fall, when the weather started to turn cool, the stage area where we rehearsed, became heavily populated with flies. In the middle of a rehearsal, I became aware of a commotion in the trumpet section. It turned out that Jimmy, and two other students had taken to picking up flies and launching them at each other, pea-shooter style, using their trumpet mouthpieces. It's funny, the things you remember about people. Jimmy was a great kid and I am so sorry that he has left this world. I am equally certain that he left a lot of love behind with many people. Godspeed, Jimmy!

I’m a high school friend of James. We had so many good times back in the 70s in Hermon. Basketball and ping pong were the sports Jim and us played together and we were pretty good at it. We all wanted cheerleaders for a girlfriend. Mr. Robarge would allow us into his basement to listen to music and stay out of trouble, other parents did the same, basketball at the Yerdon’s, ping pong at the Snow’s, etc… Some of us called Jim, King James and we called Tom, Sir Tom none of the rest of us had royal nicknames. I can’t think of any bad memories, Jim was a good friend and I’m sad to know he is no longer with us. My condolences to Jim’s family and friends. I’m sorry for this being garbled, I wanted everyone to know that my memories of Jim were all good and filled with happiness.
