I had the pleasure of working for Jim in the mid-1960s at the Civil Service Commission during the establishment and early years of the Federal government's Youth Opportunity Campaign which was under Jim's direction. I remember Jim fondly as a warm and kind boss and friend. Quick to smile and laugh, open and thoughtful, Jim was a role model for how "good guys" can be successful supervisors and program managers. I was very sorry to learn of his passing in today's Washington Post.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of James R. Poole. The country has lost one of its greatest treasures. It was my privilege as a Staffing Specialist at Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C. to recruit and appoint him as the Personnel Director for the hospital in 1952. He was a superb organizer, manager and administrator. He treated everyone with fairness, respect and dignity. My faith in his capabilities, honesty and integrity was proven time and time again over the years by his outstanding performance. He moved up the career ladder as Administrative Assistant to the hospital Superintendant. Later he became Director of the Office of Student Employment Programs in the Office of the U.S. Civil Service Commission. He reached great heights working on special staffing projects for several U.S. presidents and he received many accolades for his service. His notable contributions to educational and civic organizations at the highest level were numerous. On a more personal note, my husband Dr. Oscar Ellison,Jr. and Jim became the best of friends as well as business partners, Beta Nu Boule brothers, and next door neighbors at Cabin Point in the Northern Neck area of Virginia. Jim, his wife Pat, my husband and I have taken many trips together and had often talked about driving cross country together one day. We enjoyed each other's company immensely and I'm grateful for the good times we shared.I cherish the memories. I send my deepest sympathy to Pat and the family and I will keep them in my prayers.

We are sad to learn of the loss of Jim Poole. By every measure of the word, Jim Poole was a gentleman and a scholar. His contributions to the greater northern Virgninia community will live on in the form of the Beta Nu Boule Foundation, for which he was the moving force. Today, the Foundation touches the lives of many young people from underprivileged communities in Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William counties. We also remember Jim Poole as a dear friend and neighbor at Cabin Point in the Northern Neck of Virginia. As a native Virginian, he loved that picturesque part of the world where the river and rolling plains met. We will miss Jim Poole, and we remember him fondly as a proud man, a man who contributed to society, and a man who made a difference in the lives of many, many people. Our family sends its deepest condolences to Mrs. Pat Poole, to his daughter JoAnn, and his grandson Seamus. May God rest his soul.
