“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” - John Muir

James “Jim” Joseph MacDonald, 71, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, in Rancho Mirage, California.

Born on October 22, 1954, in Saugus, Massachusetts, Jim spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, a place that perfectly matched his love for history, nature, and adventure.

Jim proudly served for many years as a Ranger with the National Park Service, working at iconic sites including Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and the John Muir House, with a short stint in New Orleans. He was deeply passionate about his work, especially the educational programs he created for school-aged children. Sharing history and inspiring curiosity brought him great joy. He was widely respected and loved by colleagues and visitors alike.

Outside of work, Jim had a true wanderer’s spirit. He traveled the world with close friends, always eager for new experiences, good conversations, and meaningful connections.

Jim was known for his kindness, warmth, and gentle presence. He had a way of making people feel welcome, heard, and appreciated — often with a quiet smile and a thoughtful word.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis Claire MacDonald and James Joseph MacDonald.

Jim is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Joe Koslouski, brother Michael MacDonald, nephew Mike Koslouski, niece Jennifer Lusk, and cousins Julie Bowen, Anne Schmidel, and John Fahy.

Jim’s legacy lives on in the countless people he taught, inspired, and befriended throughout his life.
