Jack Sanders
September 5th, 1942 - May 8th, 2023
September 5th, 1942 - May 8th, 2023
Jack was born September 5, 1942 to father Jack Sr. and mother Thelma. After his parents’ divorce, Jack was raised by his father and his stepmother, Bernice, and he spent much time with his beloved Grandma Floy as well. He grew up in the Granada Hills area and was a good student, a good athlete, and class president in high school, well-liked and popular among his classmates. He struggled briefly with geometry until a fateful afternoon when he received tutoring from noted physicist Richard Feynman, and then Jack went on to be a superb math student and, later, a math teacher.
As a teenager, Jack spent a couple of summers working in Jackson Hole, Wyoming at the Jenny Lake Store and its gas station. He fell in love with the area and returned to it many times during his life, considering it to be one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. After high school, Jack spent some time at Annapolis and also attended UCLA, where he studied to become an educator. It was during his college years that he met his future wife, Nancy, introducing himself to the lovely lady by sitting behind her in class, tapping her on the shoulder, and begging her never to cut her long, blonde hair.
Jack and Nancy married in 1965. Both worked as educators in southern California for several years before welcoming their first child into the world in 1973, daughter Melanie. Daughter Christi came along in 1976, and then after a move north to the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, along came daughter number 3, Jill. Jack worked a number of odd jobs at first, including chopping wood and joining handyman neighbor George Slocum on roofing jobs, but later he got a job teaching primarily math at North Middle School in Grants Pass, where he worked for decades until he reached retirement age.
Over the years, Jack dabbled in many different things including karate, a small and temporary greeting cards side business, and a talent show act as a bumbling but humorous stage magician known as “The Great Sandini” that he performed for special occasions and to much applause and chuckling. He also worked with wife Nancy and friends Jerry and Sue Dawson to create a mail-order homeschooling curriculum called Quest International that never quite got off the ground but did provide lots of fodder for fun times, fond memories, and laughter afterward.
Jack enjoyed spirited debate and had very strong opinions. He developed a love of gardening and an interest in self-sufficiency, and spent a lot of time outdoors. Favorite musicians included James Taylor, Harry Chapin, The Limelighters, Shelby Flint, and folk singing trio Peter, Paul, and Mary; sometimes he played some of their songs on his acoustic guitar. Rumor has it that he and wife Nancy were once talked into attending a Jimi Hendrix concert, although certain members of his family find that extremely hard to visualize without photographic proof.
A heart attack in 2010 forced Jack to cut back on the volunteer grounds maintenance he used to do for a local religious organization, but he did still enjoy beautifying the yard around his and Nancy’s Rogue River home and spent lots of time in their English-style garden “across the creek” from their house, observing nature. He kept close to home in his later years, but he did get to visit his beloved Jackson Hole one last time in 2018 for a family reunion with his brothers. In 2023, Jack finally lost his battle with the Alzheimer’s disease he’d been diagnosed with years earlier, and he passed away peacefully on May 8th. Preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Sam, Jack is survived by wife Nancy; brothers Ken, Tony, Joe, and Jon; daughters Melanie, Christi, and Jill; and grandsons Shane and Cayden. He loved his family very much, and he will be missed.

Ed Elliott
I'm Ed Elliott, Jack's best friend from the 8th grade through high school. I looked up to him, respected him and learned from him. We played tennis together, went to Wyoming together in 1958 and 1959, and were in each others weddings. We shared terrific experiences. I will always remember Jack. RIP.

Jack's brother Kenny and I graduated in the same high school class. I lived about 4 blocks away in the same housing tract as the Sander's family so I saw Jack many times during those years. I remember thinking that he was very intelligent. I didn't get to know him very well as I was the same age as Kenny. I was invited along a few times on Sander's family day trips and I sort of remember Jack telling me he wanted to be a teacher. Over the years I thought about Jack many times, and several times asked about him from others who knew him. In fact, I thought about Jack a couple of days ago. Young Jack, as some of us called him during those years in Granada Hills, is an integral part of the wonderful memories I have of my teen years in Granada Hills. I am saddened by Jack's passing. I will remember him with fondness, and will always be thankful that I got the chance to spend time with him. God Bless You Young Jack. REST IN PEACE

His favorite bands may have been James Taylor or Peter, Paul, and Mary, but, in 1967, he, Sam, and I went to a Jimi Hendrix concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The show was stopped about half way through because people had jumped into the moat in front of the stage and were splashing water onto the equipment on stage. The show continued but not too long after that we had to leave because Jack couldn't take any more. That was disappointing to Sam and I, but we were embarrassed to be with Jack because he spent the whole time with his fingers in his ears. The next day, while Sam and I complained to our friends that we only got to see half of the show. Jack got to impress his grammar school students, in East L.A., that he had gone to a Jimi Hendrix concert. For 3 or 4 years, Jack and Nancy took me with them to The Highlands Lodge, in the Grand Tetons National Park. The three of us hiked all over the park, tubed down the Snake River, and ate dinner in tepees at the Chuckwagon restaurant. He and I spent hours making improvements to the little creek out behind our cabin to make it flow a little faster. Melanie and I will be camping there again this year. For me, the Park reeks of Jack.

I've had the good fortune of knowing Jack and Nancy for the past several years. I have enjoyed engaging with Jack on several topics related to the news, his teaching career, and other jobs along the way. Nothing like showing up with a box of See's candy to get his interest! Much love to his family. He will be missed...
Tony Sanders
I am Jacks brother, Tony. I am 10 years younger than Jack. His favorite bands may have been James Taylor or Peter, Paul and Mary, but in 1967, he brothers Sam and I, went to see Jimi Hendrix at the Hollywood Bowl. About half way through the show, they had to stop it and ask the audience to get out of the waster that separated the stage from the audience because they were splashing water onto the equipment on stage. The music eventually got going again, but Jack had had enough. He had spent most of the concert with his fingers in his ears and he was embarrassing us. The next day Sam and I were complaining to our friends that we only saw half of the concert and Jack was bragging to his East L.A. grammar school students that he had attended a Jimi Hendrix concert.
Robert Tryon
My name is Robert Tryon and I lived about two blocks from Jack and his brother Kenny. I spent many days and years with Kenny but less with Jack as he was younger than us and had different friends. I remember Jack as a very good looking man, sharp and friendly. I lost track of Jack personally but continued to hear about him because his brother, Kenny, and I went to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and lived together in a trailer. Jack’s name would come up every so often but less over the years. RIP Jack
