He wasn't afraid of anyone — on the pitch or in life.

Jack "Jacko" McDonagh was a force of nature in Irish football — a fearless, combative centre half whose tall, polished presence defined some of the most celebrated years the League of Ireland has ever produced. Born on 26 April 1962 in Donnybrook, Dublin, he discovered his calling on the pitches of the city he loved, and never stopped playing the game with everything he had. Jacko came through Shelbourne's youth ranks before joining Bohemians in 1979, where he made his League of Ireland debut and immediately turned heads. In his three seasons with the Gypsies, he earned the PFAI Young Player of the Year award for 1981–82, a recognition that signalled what was to come. In the summer of 1982 he crossed the city to Shamrock Rovers, and it was there that his name became synonymous with an era. During the club's storied four-in-a-row championship run, he claimed two League of Ireland titles (1984 and 1985), the FAI Cup (1985), the Dublin City Cup (1983), and represented Rovers in six European Cup matches — experiences that expanded his horizons and stoked his ambition. Between 1983 and 1984, Jacko earned three senior international caps for the Republic of Ireland under manager Eoin Hand, making his debut in a resounding 8–0 victory over Malta at Dalymount Park in November 1983. He had also represented his country at U21 level, earning four caps. The international stage suited him perfectly — as those who watched him always said, he wasn't afraid of anyone. In 1985, Jacko took the boldest step of his career: a move to Nîmes Olympique in the south of France, becoming the first and only Irish player ever to wear the club's colours. He fell in love with the city, the club, and the warmth of the Gard region. He married Maryse in Nîmes, and their sons Edward and Jean-Baptiste were born there. After spells at Derry City, Oxford United, and KSV Waregem in Belgium, his professional career concluded around 1991, and he settled permanently in the Gard with his family. Later life brought profound challenges. In September 2011, at 49, he broke his leg playing for the Ireland Veterans team — a testament to his enduring love of the game. A stroke suffered in 2022 left him paralysed on his left side, requiring full-time care in a South Dublin nursing home. The Irish football community rallied around him with tribute matches and fundraisers, proof of how deeply he was loved. Through it all, Jacko kept his famous wit and charm intact. Jack "Jacko" McDonagh passed away on 21 September 2026, aged 64, the first member of Shamrock Rovers' legendary four-in-a-row side to leave us. His funeral was held at Donnybrook Church on 25 September 2026. He is survived by his wife Maryse and his sons Edward and Jean-Baptiste.

The McDonagh family are very grateful that this game is being staged in Bray on Sunday and they really appreciate all the support they have received to date from the Irish football community. Sunday's match is another opportunity for all of us to show how much we loved Jacko as a player and show how much we are there for him now.

He had a very Irish game, he wasn't afraid of anyone. Even after having signed for Nimes, he continued to fight as if he had to convince us to sign him.

Jacko McDonagh is a League of Ireland legend whose abilities on the pitch are reflected by his popularity off it. There isn't a fan I've met in the League recently who hasn't asked me how Jacko is doing. This is our opportunity to say thank you to Jacko and to raise much-needed funds as he continues his battle against this debilitating illness.
