John Russell Benning Henstridge began his earthly journey on December 29, 1927. Shortly after completing his military obligation, Jack met his wife, Helen, and they began raising their seven children. In 1962, they moved into an old farmhouse in Upper Gagetown, NB while Jack worked as a commercial pilot. Jack and Helen quietly ran this 150 year old homestead, learning about tree-farming and beekeeping. Their house sadly burned in 1973, a chimney fire the cause. This event marked the beginning of the Henstridge’s experience with the “cordwood” building method. The family pulled together, completing their new home on the same site. Jack then authored the popular book “Building the Cordwood Home”. His articles in publications like Mother Earth News, brought this untapped building method into the mainstream. His book has sold for decades, even beyond his passing in 2006. Jack’s renowned knowledge of aviation was on full display while he announced air shows. He also flew his ultra-lite plane around the Upper Gagetown area. Mr. Henstridge was active in many civic events, mostly as a loyal member of the Lions Club. He was thought by some to be the “unofficial Mayor” of Upper Gagetown. The door to the Henstridge home was always open, as many cordwood home seekers passed through. Everyone was welcomed. Jack is missed by friends, family, and town, as well as the international community of those building their own home. Many were touched by his indomitable personality, as well as his memorable advice and storytelling. He is survived by his wife, Helen, as well as all of their children and grandchildren.
