I met JM when I joined N2Africa in 2014. I visited Bukavu and went on field trip to N2Africa sites. It was fun being with JM. He made sure the hotel I lodged was good enough, he visited to check on me when I arrived at the hotel. Though my French was and is still very little, I worked with JM with confidence… One thing I can easily remember JM for- was how he presented his pictures-you are either bloated or too slim…and we always made fun out of this. And whenever he sends any document to me with pictures, the first request is to please check the pictures if the people are OK….. I loved working with JM-hardworking, open minded and ready to learn, even from young people….. I realized that the power of the moment is not in the moment itself. Every single one of us has the power to make and shape our own moments, you have set an example in this direction JM. I wish life offers us more time to make use of his expertise the more. May his soul rest in peace.

I have been Jean Marie’s colleague since April 2019 and i was impressed by his commitment, his team spririt and his committed leadership for the development of agriculture. When we opened the Uvira office, he shered with us his vision and his wish to see our substation on the same scale as that Nairobi. Being still new to IITA, he warmly welcomed me and gave me advice that helped me a lot for this new position, i remember it very much and thank Jean Marie. I can not forget your efforts for the success that we have so far in within the Uvira Office and within framework of the PICAGL Project. May your soul rest in peace.

A quiet man but with a focus on the goal, I came to learn of Jean- Marie through the N2Arica Project. Jean-Marie you are gone but I can’t forget those moments of jokes and laughter with you following the learning journeys during one of the N2Africa planning meetings in Mbale, Uganda. In our subsequent project meetings, the last in Rwanda in 2018, we always recalled it, “Uganda needs forests and Congo needs the beans”. We envisaged its reality when you would one day become Minister of Agriculture in DRC and support production of more beans for the Congolese. You said that better rhizobia strains were hiding in the Congo forests but would isolate them and produce good inoculants for increased bean production. You suggested for me in Uganda, a business case of planting trees to produce stakes to support intensification of climbing beans since there were hardly any trees in the highlands. You are gone without both ideas materialising. Such is life: we plan but we don’t know what tomorrow holds for us. I will forever miss you but will not forget this very well-meant joke on how to better and scale the N2Arica project. My condolences and prayers for comfort and strength to your family.

I was so sad to learn that Jean-Marie Sanginga passed. I worked with Jean-Marie in the first phase of the N2Africa project. I appreciated his facilitation of my visits to Bukavu. I am sorry I must have made his life difficult at times with my continuing requests for M&E data… But in the challenging circumstances in South Kivu, he delivered, and we could showcase the achievements of Jean-Marie, his team and the farmers. He was a unique person: thoughtful, kind, reliable and supportive. He has contributed to many lives, mentoring students and young people. He will be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
