This wonderful journey, like every match, has come to an end with the final whistle.

Igor Protti — nicknamed "Lo Zar," The Tsar — was one of Italian football's most beloved and improbable heroes. Born on September 24, 1967, in the S. Ermete neighborhood of Rimini, he grew up in a working-class family where the game was everything. His father Flavio, a bricklayer who founded the local club A.S.D. Sant'Ermete, raised a son who would carry the spirit of provincial football to the very heights of Serie A. As a boy, Igor worked construction sites at age eleven to save money for a football, idolized Gianni Rivera, and wrote in a primary school essay that he dreamed of scoring in a European Cup final in the 90th minute. The dream, in its own way, came true. Protti made his professional debut at sixteen with hometown club Rimini on May 27, 1984, and spent the next two decades proving that talent, loyalty, and sheer force of will could outlast any contract. He passed through Livorno, Bergamo, and Messina — steadily building a reputation as a prolific, relentless striker — before his defining breakthrough at Bari. In the 1995–96 Serie A season, he shared the Golden Boot with Giuseppe Signori, netting 24 goals even as his club suffered relegation, making him the only player in history to win the top-scoring title with a relegated side. After stints at Lazio — where he scored a last-minute Rome derby equalizer and won the Italian Super Cup — and a memorable loan at Napoli, where he briefly wore the sacred number 10 shirt once carried by Maradona, Protti returned to Livorno in 1999. What followed was the stuff of legend. He scored 27 goals in 31 games in 2001–02 to lift Livorno from Serie C1 after 31 years, then topped Serie B scoring with 24 goals the following season, and ultimately captained the club to Serie A in 2004 — ending a 55-year absence from Italy's top flight. Protti retired in 2005 at age 37, having made 699 official appearances and scored 257 goals. Livorno retired his number 10 jersey in his honor. He was awarded honorary citizenship by both Livorno and Bari, and the Andrea Fortunato National Award in 2009. In July 2025, he publicly announced a diagnosis of colon cancer, describing it as "the toughest match" of his life. He faced it with the same courage he brought to every pitch. He passed away on June 19, 2026, leaving behind his partner Daniela, his children Nicholas Flavio and Noemi, and grandchildren Flavio and Gregorio. His final words, released by his family, were characteristic of the man: "This wonderful journey, like every match, has come to an end with the final whistle."
