He kept the horses, brewed the beer, and never once asked for applause.

Humphrey Richard Woollcombe Smith was a British businessman and brewer of singular character — a man who devoted the better part of his life to one institution, one town, and one unwavering set of principles. Born on 17 December 1944 in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, he was raised at Oxton Hall, the family's Queen Anne-style country estate that his grandfather had acquired in 1919. From those early years in the Yorkshire countryside, Humphrey absorbed a deep sense of tradition, frugality, and duty that would define everything he did. Educated at Eton College from 1958 to 1963, he entered the family business with his father Geoffrey. When Geoffrey died suddenly of a heart attack in May 1965 — Humphrey was just twenty years old — the brewery passed into the hands of executors. Rather than walk away, Humphrey and his younger brother Oliver quietly kept their place, waiting, learning, and gradually assuming the reins through the 1970s until they held full command by the early 1980s. What followed was more than four decades of stewardship over Samuel Smith Old Brewery, an institution founded in 1758 and one of Britain's oldest surviving independent breweries. Humphrey's approach to running the brewery was unmistakably his own. He kept the dray horses clip-clopping through Tadcaster long after every other brewery had abandoned them, a living testament to his belief that some things should not change. His more than 200 pubs across the United Kingdom were governed by strict rules — no background music, no televisions, no mobile phones, and firm expectations of civil behaviour — creating quiet, conversation-friendly spaces that drew loyal regulars and bewildered critics in equal measure. Beyond the brewery gates, he funded the construction of Tadcaster's community swimming pool, which opened in 1994, and personally oversaw the 1995 restoration of the 14th-century Old Vicarage to standards that surpassed English Heritage requirements. Known to take his daily lunchtime swim and to walk the mile from Oxton Hall to his office each morning, he led a life of striking personal discipline. On 1 July 1985, he married Julia Gladstone at Keir Church, near Thornhill in Dumfries. They had two children: a daughter, Maude, who runs a homeware label in London, and a son, Samuel, who manages the brewery's London pubs. Humphrey Smith died on 29 June 2026, aged 81. He leaves behind a brewery still drawing beer by traditional methods, a town shaped in no small part by his hand, and a legacy that will long provoke both admiration and debate.

I met Mr Humphrey Smith, briefly in a Travel Agent in Tadcaster. I was working them at the time for Stenaline Ferries as a support rep visiting Travel Agents. I overheard a gentleman wanting a flight asap over to Ireland for a next day funeral. The member of staff double checked band there were no seats available. Being a salesperson and nosey, I suggested the catamaran or overnight ferry to Dublin. He told me his driver could take him to Anglesey and another driver would pick him up. He thanked me, quite politely , and promptly booked. As I watched him leave the shop, the manageress told me to watch him as he got into an old black Mini Metro, then told me who he was. That was my brief interaction with the kindly and humble Mr Humphrey, who displayed no airs and graces.Later when I began working in the Brewing Industry, I was told he knew every single Christian name of all his staff. I think he was a gentleman who valued the things in life that mattered to his and my generation. Manners, Respect and Care.

I met Humphrey in 1984 whilst I was studying Computer Science in Coventry; he was different to my course lecturers in that he would visit us at home and drag us (kicking and screaming!) to the pub or to a live gig, or invite us to his home to play live music. Generous, eccentric and humble, Humphrey cared for and supported many people without any unnecessary conforming to airs, graces or what others might expect. Humphrey was the real deal.
