I want everyone to know how much I loved my Uncle Howard and how very much he meant to me. He took me in to live with him one summer, taught me how to do some "work" around his store and even let me tag along when he went on vacation. The family get together s he had were some of the fondest memories I have. I only wish that I'd stayed closer to him and his family.

I was 16 years old when I first started at the store on South Limestone Street. I was there the day it opened and I worked there for three years, came back to work at the store on East Main Street, two more times. I knew what a good person he was to work for, but didn’t realize how good, until the stores were sold, about twelve years ago. At that time I had about 30 years total as a Howard’s Foods employee. Howard was always friendly whenever I saw him. He held the company picnics every year, that so many people enjoyed. The manager’s Christmas party was also looked forward to by many. He took good care of his employees and I have missed seeing him these last few years. The whole family were all good to work with and I am very sorry for your loss.

I had the privilege of seeing Howard the evening before his passing. We were celebrating his granddaughter’s (my niece’s) fourth birthday party. He made everyone laugh by complaining the party had Kroger chicken, and that Lee’s was superior and he would have even paid for it, because it’s the best. (I agree)! I’ve always known him to be a kind, humble, and generous man. I’m thankful he was able to spend that evening with family.

Howard was a thoughtful, generous and genuine person who helped a lot of people in so many ways. I'm glad he had a good 4th of July with his family. He must certainly be with his buddies golfing on the golden green having quite a time.

I started working for Howard's IGA in 1995. The first time I ever met him was when he walked in the coffee shop/ bakery door, walked behind the counter, poured his own cup of coffee and tossed his money on top of the register. I thought, who does this old man think he is?? I asked another employee about him and they said, that's Howard..lol. I'm glad I didnt say anything to him. Years later I told him about it, he just laughed. Like I told Sasha, I didnt realize what a great man he was to work for until he retired. So thankful to have known him. My deepest sympathies Mary, Tamara, Gabe and Sasha

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have such an amazing Dad. He always encouraged me to better myself. He showed me by example that if you want something, you have to work for it. Despite going from modest beginnings to being a very successful businessman, he always remained humble. Although I miss him terribly, I will always carry with me the lessons of the wisest man I ever knew.
