Loved Ones

Helen Joan Levy died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 after living valiantly through a long illness.  She was with her family at their temporary home in Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, where they have been since March 2020.

The hallmarks of her life were kindness, a love of adventure, and bringing people together.  She is survived by her devoted husband, Carl Levy, her loving daughters, Colette Levy and Lisa Levy Goldberg, and son-in-law Jon Goldberg. She also leaves four grandchildren and many dear friends and relatives around the world.

The only child of newly immigrated Elsa Kienzle Levi (Fiji and Australia via Germany) and Hans Levi (Germany), Helen was born in 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Highland Park, Illinois. Helen was working in Chicago when she met Carl while skiing, an activity they would continue to enjoy with each other and their future family throughout their lives.  After a long courtship and whirlwind marriage, Helen and Carl moved to Europe to begin an adventure-filled love story. Helen’s ability to connect with people and forge lasting relationships, along with her desire for new experiences, made her a perfect partner for Carl, whose career took him to Belgium, Norway, France, Spain, England and Italy throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.  Despite the challenges of raising a family in different foreign countries, Helen embraced the people and culture of each assignment resulting in life-long friendships and many joyful memories.  In 1988, Helen and Carl retired to Kenilworth, IL, which served as their home base until 2017, when they moved to New York City to be with family.

Always active in her community, Helen served on the boards of the American School of Madrid and the Selfhelp Home in Chicago, volunteered for the Shining Stars Foundation in Colorado, and contributed as an active member of various International Women’s Clubs, the Little Traverse Yacht Club and several book clubs.  With her love of people, family and adventure, Helen traveled as far as Samoa and New Guinea and spent years researching and expanding her family’s lineage to include over 1,000 family members.  She subsequently wrote a treasured ancestral history and personal memoir, capturing her own far-flung adventures, as well as those of generations before her.  Through these heirlooms, Helen’s charm and thoughtfulness will continue to touch the lives of many.

Interment will be in Red Butte Cemetery in Aspen, Colorado.  Due to the strictures of the pandemic, a Memorial Service will be held in the later part of 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shining Stars Foundation in Colorado (www.shiningstarsfoundation.org, 1-970-726-8009) or the Selfhelp Home in Chicago (www.selfhelphome.org,1-773-985-5942) are welcomed.

The family wishes to thank the many people on Martha’s Vineyard and elsewhere who helped make Helen’s last months full of beauty, comfort and grace.  This was even more remarkable given the context of these difficult times for all.  You will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Dear Carl, Lisa, and Colette, Even though we haven't had a chance to get together in recent years, we have remained in touch through our Xmas letters. Donald and I were so sad to learn about Helen's passing. We fondly remember all the good times we shared together in Paris, Madrid, Marbella, and Kenilworth. You also came to visit us in Cannes, where you celebrated your 45th wedding anniversary. We had a very nice dinner at La petite maison, in Nice. Helen was a remarkable person, who we loved dearly. We cherish all the wonderful memories we have of both of you. Much love, Josy & Donald

I just finished reading Helen's book, Continents Apart, two nights ago. It's hard for me to put into words how impressed I am by her book, and even more so by her amazing life. Wow! I have read or re-told parts of her story to anyone who will listen. I remember visiting with you, it must have been in Aspen, when Helen unrolled her huge family tree on her king-sized bed. I had asked about the Holocaust and she pointed out where certain branches of the tree just stopped. It is a visual that has stayed with me. Reading her book has filled in other parts of that story, including Carl's service in WWII--I loved the detailed descriptions--and Helen's uncle in Muncie IN who helped save nearly 30 family members. All of that is interesting enough, but then you throw in the South Pacific parts of the story, and Carl & Helen's amazing international life together, well, it just boggles the mind. I summed it up to my husband this way: Helen Levy was WAY cool. Which brings me to the fact that I will miss her. Helen was just lovely in every way and it was always a delight and honor to be in her presence. She hosted a beautiful baby shower for me in her home in Kenilworth in 2007 and it just couldn't have been more perfect. Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your dear wife and mother. I will never forget Helen and I treasure her book as well as my memories of time spent with her. I was lucky to know her. Much love, Perry Irish Hodgson Charlevoix, MI

Dear Carl, Lisa and Colette, I was so very sorry to hear of Helen's recent death, and although I have not seen or spoken to her for many years, I always remember her warm, smiling eyes and her very caring nature. We met in Paris in the 1970's, and later Helen and I tried to meet again in the US, but sadly, it was never to be. I know her presence is terribly missed by you now, as well as by many others who knew her.. Helen was always such an elegant, shining light, and her presence must have touched many lives. I just regret that our traveling lives weren't able to connect more often, I send much love and my condolences to you all at this difficult time. Robin Hardiman - in London .

I will miss Helen. I worked with her for many years on her computer in Aspen. It was always a pleasure to see her happy smile and her easy going nature. I learned so much from her and loved hearing her stories. During our first years working together, she decided she wanted to host a tea for me when my parents arrived in town. She invited my other clients and parents. I was so touched. She was very generous and thoughtful. I will miss her.

Was shocked to learn about Helen's death in your X-mas card! Wow , so many memories while we shared years in Madrid. I always remember a Sunday lunch on your patio in Mirasierra. Helen and I shared time on the American School of Madrid board, too. She was an elegant and beautiful lady. Years have passed (since 1979) and we had a reunion at your home in Kenilworth as we all retired and repatriated back to the USA. Lots of laughs and reminiscing. She brightened the world, and I, too, can still see her smile. So very sorry dear family. She is now at peace and we can say it was a job well done. She made this world a better place. But, she lives on in her children and grandchildren.

Helen will remain forever in our hearts . She embraced us in Madrid , was the first person to meet our new born daughter ( with Carl ) at the Hospital Aleman ,and introduced us to so many lovely people also living abroad. Years later, we re-connected on the slopes of Aspen ,and where we rekindled our friendships. Each year , the beautiful holiday photo card enabled us to watch the family grow- I know how much Helen cherished her family ! May her memory be forever the light that shines bright for all .Sending our love . Debbie & Jimmy Baxter San Antonio ,TX
