Hazel Smith Thomas, age 86, died peacefully on July 21 st, surrounded by her loving family. She had been very recently diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, and after two weeks at Fairview Southdale Hospital, came home to spend her final days with her family and Miniature Schnauzers. Prior to her illness and quick decline, she was a robust and active church musician, parent, grandmother, and great-grandmother, with great mental acuity, a humble spirit, and a gracious and welcoming personality. Hazel Marie Potts was born in 1934 in Phoenix, Arizona to John C. Potts and Hollus G. Potts. She attended Madison No. 1 Elementary School and North Phoenix High School, studied piano and organ, and played an active musical role at Palmcroft Baptist Church. After earning her Master's Degree at Arizona State University, she taught music to thousands of schoolchildren in the Madison School District for 36 years. She served as organist at First Baptist Church (Phoenix) and Central United Methodist Church and was an expert and supportive accompanist for the Phoenix Boys Choir, the Phoenix Symphony Chorale, and other musical organizations. Hazel is survived by her two sons Harvey Keith Smith II (Tami) and Mark Russell Smith (Ellen) and step-children J. Eric Thomas (John Migliaro), Claire Thomas (Lori Kirgan), Eileen Abajian, and Paul Thomas (Denise) as well as many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Albion Clarence Thomas Jr., her parents and her brothers John Potts and Russell Potts. Following the death of her husband Albion and her retirement from teaching in Arizona, Hazel moved to Edina, Minnesota in 2005, and was the rock upon which the Smith family stood. She was beloved by her fellow musicians of the Colonial Church of Edina Chorale, the high-school music students whom she accompanied, as well as conducting students at the University of Minnesota. Pre-COVID, she was a daily visitor to the exercise classes at the Southdale YMCA and was an active and vital presence in her church community as well as at numerous musical events throughout the Twin Cities. She continued serving as Associate Organist at Colonial Church until her death. Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, Psalms 100:2 - "Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing." She was selfless, humble, gifted and giving, and universally loved by all who knew her. She lived a Christian life by example and touched so many. We are grateful to have been given the incredible gift of her life. Services will be held at a later time when the family sincerely hopes all can gather together to celebrate her vibrant life. She will be interred at Greenwood Memorial Park in Phoenix, Arizona beside her husband of 27 years, Albion C. Thomas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Colonial Church of Edina or the American Cancer Society.

Growing up in Phoenix our family attended First Baptist Church for many years. Hazel was the pianist/organist on the great pipe organ for all the services. My parents Warren and Janet Meter were choir members with her husband Al and Warren a was a frequent soloist. Hazel was always his accompanist. Great memories of those years at First Baptist.

Hazel as a family matriarch was a wonderful example of "actions speak louder than words", the quiet power of gentleness - she was nurturing and respectful, perceptive, holding her presence. People could be at peace being with her. She included us - her warmth, which you can see in her in these family pictures & in expressions of all those she embraced, was a goodness radiating love. I feel happy for her in that, from my perspective, because of her quality of character/seeing who people are, she naturally created room & got to receive the fullness of who they were, and maybe they could even bring and be more themselves. This beautiful and strong impact of loving people for who they are, letting their talents shine, their hearts grow, travels down and through the generations ~ bringing balance and wholeness to family dynamics can be so rare - I see this love in my brothers and my nephews and their families, and on to the next generation, her great grandchild. My last memories I shared in a message to her were of 1: her caroling party - We (my twin sister & I) were younger maybe high school kids, so welcomed - I am remembering her playing piano or home organ, with a gregarious gathering round singing, and later walking to the fire station to experience being part of singing the hallelujah chorus, music echoing, resounding around the fire trucks, was something to behold! & 2: I remember one of my happiest Thanksgivings was in Minnesota - we all went on a walk with their awesome dogs playing - her little dog bounding through the forest and all the way across a wide expanse of field seemed the epitome of happiness; then hanging out back at home, having real conversations, pie, & fun just being together. I've been thinking about Hazel a lot - reflecting on her and being moved both because I'll miss her and getting to know and be with her and family for even more good times, and also because it is really beautiful that because of who she was she got to receive and experience the fullness of people's hearts. So again I feel happy for her in the way she lived her life - I believe this as well as her faith was part of what her friend described as her radiant joy - and I feel encouraged, especially in these raw times in our world, for us all to see and love each other in the real true way she loved her family and friends. I know I'll still experience this as she lives on in all the love she gave. In this stream of consciousness unfolding, I'm earnest - she honored us knowing her and I hope these reflections send love and care. Many blessings.

We were always blessed by the extraordinary example Hazel set. One soon came to the realization that not only did she appreciate God's gift of glorious music but also the glorious gifts of nature and the gift of lasting friendships. A fond memory we will always cherish, was singing with the annual Smith family Christmas caroler's choir.

We are so so so so so sorry for your loss. Hazel was ALWAYS so so so so incredibly kind and generous... and she was an incredible listener and always so so understanding. We loved our trips to Europe with her, and Gray and I are fortunate we got to see her last summer in MN for a Taekwondo tournament. Hazel taught me about the importance of always being kind; it's remarkable the way you talked about her and her selflessness... and we will miss her. Love, Kerstan, Gray, Abby, Gabriel ❤️❤️

How fortunate to witness Hazel a beautiful human that should have been named "Love." Hazel without knowing, became the mentor for every woman around her, especially me. She cheerfully chose to care of her family in every way, every day, from advising, cooking, cleaning, cheerleading, to packing, no chore was beyond her abilities. I witnessed her giving generously, never argumentative, yet decisive in her wisdom and advice. To watch her work was to SEE the verb "love" in action, the modern Proverbs 31 woman, her children rise up and called her blessed. I enjoyed being in the kitchen with Hazel as she cooked. She was always careful on measurements and ingredients and helpful either as chef or sous-chef. My favorite memories surround the evenings at the family table, dining and playing games. Gee, Hazel was in her 80's but always gave everyone a run for their money! Her brain was so sharp, her manner festive but never boastful. What a great sport! You were wonderfully loved Hazel and will be woefully missed.
