I loved Cal and admired him growing up in St. Louis. I loved when he would ref the stake basketball games because I knew that they would be fair games. He was a great example of hard work and dedication. But he also loved fun. Ryan and I enjoyed a game of 7 Up, 7 Down with Cal and Heather in their Florida home that they generously opened up to us as poor newlyweds on a trip. Our love to the entire Squires/Livingston family. Cal will never be forgotten.

The majority of my memories with my Grandfather take place when I was young, foolish, and careless. As a kid, I remember watching the movie Up and making the connection that the old man looked just like my papa; Grey hair, glasses, and an box like jaw. Whenever I saw him I always thought of him as the character. But now that I’m older and I can think a little deeper I come back to the same comparison and instead of seeing the similarities of their appearances I see the similarities of their character. Determined, Adventurous, Loving friend/husband, and kind. So maybe I wasn’t wrong to think of him that way, but still I learn more about who he was and what he’s done. Today, I realize the power and history behind my own middle name and how he chose to be called by it. I’m proud to be his grandson and to carry part of him with me, for he has shown and taught me great wisdom and strength. I will never forget him and his knowledge.

Always I looked forward to my calls and visits with Heather and Cal at The Dancewear Shoppe. Always a kind word and an uplifting experience. Life and business might be going in all directions but always you felt appreciated and brought back to the humanity that mattered most. Cal took his shoulder rehab in stride and patiently waited for his Friday date nights with Heather. A true gentleman’s gentleman with undeniable and understated strength of character that I truly admired!

Dearest Heather, Tim, Emma, Aaron, Bryan and Cam. My heart aches for each of you with the passing of your amazing husband and dad. I remember the first day I met Cal, when Heather brought him home to 4601 Miller to meet the Strassburgs. I was young and was very impressed with this smart and gentle spirit that would become my brother in law and an important part of the family. Quiet and reserved was the way I will always remember dear Cal. When someone is as intelligent as Cal is you know that he spent a great deal of his time in thoughtful contemplation. The first ride I ever had in a convertible was in Cal's Silver Oldsmobile Cutlass. It was a classic just like Cal. I recall a time before Cal and Heather got married when I got to visit an apartment that Cal and Bruce shared in Rochester. Their landlord was a little old lady that had a pet raccoon that she kept on the roof. Cal was happy to show me this odd pet. I really got to know Cal better when he hired my Kevin to work for Sverdrup and we moved to St. Louis. Because of this opportunity we got to spend great days together in family dinners and fun family activities. Uncle Cal became my kids favorite. Cal was such a hard worker and I loved the way he worked smart. If it was doing yard work or packing a moving truck, Cal knew the best way to do it. A memory I will always treasure was the sweet day Cal came to the hospital when our son Nathan was born. Heather and Cal were one of the few people who saw Nathan alive in this life. The nurse wanted us to get some special pictures so Cal took his wedding ring off and placed it tenderly around Nathan tiny's thumb. This showed in comparison how small and fragile this angel boy was. Then I will always hold dear the sweet and powerful talk that Cal gave at Nathan's funeral. In it Cal quoted William Wordsworth, "Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting; The soul that rises with us, our life's star Hath had elsewhere its setting And cometh from afar; Not in entire forgetfulness, And not in utter nakedness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come From God, who is our home. The homely nurse doth all she can To make her foster-child, her inmate, Man Forget the glories he hath known, And that imperial palace when he came." I will miss you dear Cal but I know without a doubt you are home and that our Heavenly Father will say to you, "Well done thou good and faithful servant." Love to you all, Val
