Grace Green [née: Gottfried] was born in Brooklyn on March 8, 1924. She graduated from Brooklyn College in the middle of World War II. Like many others, she contributed to the war effort by going to upstate New York to pick fruits and vegetables. As the war raged, in 1942, she was a hostess at a USO dance at the 92nd street YMCA where she met the love of her life, Phil Green. They were married in 1943. Grace and Phil welcomed their only child while living in Greenwich Village. A few years later, they moved to Los Angeles, where Grace became a school teacher for the next thirty-five years. Her specialty was reading and she taught in South Central, East LA, and ended her career at Castle Heights Elementary School. Grace was active in the sisterhood at Leo Baeck Temple. She was a volunteer for the National Council of Jewish Women. She was an avid tennis player and devoted film buff. She is survived by her son, Richard Adam Green, her daughter-in-law, Eliza Day-Green, and her grandson, Maxwell Green.

Les Garrick

My mother, the late Belle Garrick, and Grace or Gracie as she called her were good friends for many years. Mom lived in an apartment building on a street behind Grace's house so it was easy to visit. Mom and dad, the late Henry Garrick, were avid bridge players. So when I visited LA, they would call Grace to see if we could set up a game of rubber bridge. As far as bridge goes, let's say she enjoyed the company. That is how I got to know her. Grace was smart, kind and generous. She shared what she knew and what she liked. I think she encouraged my dad to join a Saturday morning subscription film program in Santa Monica. More than once he got me up early to attend. During her last years mom was not well and I know she regretted not calling or visiting with Grace. It would, I feel, have been good for both them. However, I did visit with Grace and Violet on May 3 of 2019. I am not sure she knew who I was (she never saw me with a beard) but she greeted me with a warm smile.

Grace was my aunt so I've known her all my life. She was a favorite of our entire family. While I will always remember her sense of family, warmth, hospitality, and of course her incandescent smile, perhaps my favorite memory is the time she did me the favor of agreeing to appear in a promotional video for my second novel. There was a lot of waiting around on the set and she was a trouper. When it came time to shoot her all-too-brief cameo it would not be an exaggeration to say she totally nailed her part. When Aunt Grace saw the video, she told me she loved it. I know I loved her.
