Dr. Gopal Ramanathan, 78, died at SIMS Hospital in Chennai, India on Saturday, May 1, following a three-week battle with COVID-19.
Gopal—one of eight siblings—was born near Chennai on June 7, 1942, to Gopal Iyer and Meenaksai. Following the completion of his undergraduate studies at St. Joseph’s College in India, he earned Master’s degrees in Computer Science and Physics from the University of Calgary and Stony Brook University, as well as a Ph.D. in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He pursued his education while working various jobs to support himself, including as a janitor, a bus driver, and a New York City cab driver.
Gopal became a sought-after cybersecurity and information assurance consultant for the U.S. Air Force at Hanscom Air Force Base. He worked for a variety of companies throughout his career including Booz Allen Hamilton, the MITRE Corporation, and Draper Laboratory. Prior to his defense work, he worked briefly as a professor of physics at the University of Bridgeport. During his retirement, he served as an advisor to SRM University in Chennai.
Ever gregarious and generous, Gopal had friends all over the world. He loved traveling and meeting new people, and went out of his way to help those in need. Gopal was also a talented Indian cook, an avid runner and bicycler, and a loving father.
Gopal is survived by his children, Ravi Ramanathan and his husband Matthew Klebanoff, and Priya Ramanathan and her fiancé Justin Fisher. He also leaves behind family and friends from multiple continents who loved him dearly.
Private Hindu cremation services were held in India for the family on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

I met Gopal just a few years ago and boy how can I forget that meeting. It ended up being an intense political debate with another colleague on US history, politics and its future. What struck me was that he wasn't shy of sharing his opinions. As I chewed on it, It dawned on me that he was very factual and a well informed person which tells me that he is a well read man. Following that I had the opportunity of working with him again briefly in Chennai for business. This quickly turned into a personal relationship when he toured me many of the Chennai temples and ended up with a lunch at his sister's place. He treated me as his son and shared a lot of his real world experiences during the short interaction I had with him. One thing I can't forget was how he was reported to police when he went for a business meeting in Alabama. Anyways, he always amazed me with his physical fitness relative to his age. I personally don't think I can hike the mountains and forests like he did even at my current age. My conversations with him were all very lively and never a dull moment. Even in all this I never saw him of being disrespectful when he comes across people who may disagree with him. Knowing he passed away peacefully gives me comfort but thinking I'll miss his lively conversations makes me sad. I'll miss him and his thoughts on how to rewrite US constitution. Hope he left enough notes behind that Ravi and Priya can use should they decide to pursue that path. Our condolences to Gopal's family but wish you all strength in dealing with this loss.
