In Loving Memory of German Victoriano Reyes, Jr.

German, a devoted father, proud Navy veteran, and cherished son and brother, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 76 years old.

Born in Manila, Philippines, German lived boldly and unapologetically, embracing life with passion and flair. After graduating from high school, he answered the call to serve, enlisting in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. During his years of service, German exemplified courage, discipline, and an unwavering dedication to his companions-in-arms and mission. He was well liked by his shipmates and was noted for positively impacting morale.

Following his military service, German moved to Philadelphia, PA and dedicated himself to building a life rooted in love and family. He married Maureen Young and together they raised a daughter, Maureen Reyes, and two sons from Maureen's first marriage, Robert and Vincent Polito. He later went on to partner with Kathleen Carpenter and together they raised a son, Victoriano Reyes.  German was devoted to his children and was a steadfast source of support, joy, and unconditional love.

German’s charm was undeniable, drawing people in and making everyone feel special.  He had a gift for turning strangers into friends and friends into family with his big smile, quick wit, and his willingness to help anyone in need.

He is survived by his children, Maureen and Victoriano, and his stepson Robert, who will carry forward his zest for life. He is also remembered by his second father, Benjamin Reyes, Sr., his siblings, Mercedes Riad (née Reyes), Richard Reyes, Robert Reyes, Paul Reyes, Gisela Ross (née Reyes), Benjamin Reyes, Jr., and Carla Weidmann (née Reyes), and many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.  He is preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Hidalgo Reyes, and father, German Victoriano Reyes, Sr.

A celebration of German’s life will be held on November 26th at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, with a military honors service recognizing his service and sacrifice. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Fair winds and following seas, German. You are forever in our hearts.

Aba my brother You know the commercial:: I wonder I wonder if we had the power to dream …….. could dream…. It was Mom’s dream to bring everyone of us to America. Aba enlisted in the Navy, Billy tried but fortunately failed due to a minor physical condition (It was the Vietnam war) Rob was drafted, he was sent to Germany (Vietnam War had ended). Anyway, back to my story. We had this beautiful playhouse Mom had built & we played school, doctor/nurse, mother/father, Billy & Rob were our children & a blond hair blue eyed baby doll. We weren’t allowed to cook so we would chop up peanuts & spread it on bananas. That would be our snack. As we got older we had one thing in common, we loved the outdoors. He & Bingo were campers with fancy equipment, Carla & I hiked & camped with equipment we could only carry on our backs. Billy had a camper which he took everywhere (even to our picnics) but it was too small to share. Gigi & Richard biked all over. Rob is the wisest one … he & Jim cruise 🚢. Aba was a good brother, I will always remember the good times we had together. His love & devotion to his children were unmatched. Generous, he'd give the shirt off his back and the first couple layers of skin if that's what was asked. He trusted me with his VW Bug while he was in the navy. Bad move, what do I know about cars, I only knew how to drive them. One time the car wouldn’t start, so the battery was dead, I opened the hood, took one shoe off & started pounding the battery. “Did you check if there was water in the battery?” He asked when I mentioned the incident to him. Mom accomplished her dream Aba & I sponsored the rest of the family to come over…. Of course with Mom’s knowledge on how to do it. We just signed papers not knowing what we were getting into😱 We just trusted her & anxious to see our siblings. One role that was very crucial. He & Maureen babysat Hassan for Adel & I when we went away and would do fun things with him. He was my IT support. I could go on & on. Aba I will miss you terribly. Although we didn’t talk to each other much, we knew we were there for each other. May you be in heaven with Mom, Daddy German, & other loved ones 🥰

From Richard Ross, German’s favorite brother in law from Cherry Hill: I composed this while sitting in the airport in San Francisco, waiting for our plane back to Philadelphia. I promise that it will be short. We were on a family vacation in Hawaii when we received the word of German’s passing. Fortunately, we will be back in time to give our last goodbyes. German was my brother, a friend and much more. We watched many Eagles and Phillies games over the years together and finally the first ever Eagles Super Bowl win. German was always present at the Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day Barbeques at Doncaster Rd. I always made extra hot dogs for him as he looked for this on these days. German was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He was also a proud and doting father to his two children. He loved his nephews and nieces and their children. He was always generous to a fault. He enjoyed children as it brought out the child within him. He was a dreamer and was forever optimistic. He maintained a low stress attitude and always believed things would work out. (I wish I had more of this trait as I tend to worry about everything.) He lived his life mostly on his own terms, until cancer. I have a unique memory and feelings about German as indirectly through him I first met my wife. I was introduced to Gisela through a college friend that was working for German at HT McDougal’s in Philadelphia. My initial encounter with Gisela did not start out very well, that is a story for another day and another time, but it eventually blossomed into a happy and long marriage. Through German, I became a member of this incredible and albeit sometimes overwhelming family. A family that is extremely welcoming, caring, and generous. My brother and sister-in-law’s have become my brothers and sisters. My Father-in-Law has become my father. Most importantly through German, I have received the greatest gifts of all things in my life, Gisela and our daughter Gabriela. I cannot imagine my life without them. For this German, I am now, and forever grateful. I will truly miss you and you will always be with us at family gatherings watching the games. You will never be far and a

Memories of my brother Aba aka German For those who don’t know, especially Aba’s nephews and nieces, Aba was already living in the US while I spent my childhood in the Philippines. My first memory of seeing Aba was his visit to the Philippines during his leave from the US Navy, which his service ended with an honorable discharge. He was proud of his service and of his country. Before I entered the room to meet Aba for the first time in my memory, he was already talking to mom and I heard his hearty laugh and melodic speaking voice. When i first saw him, he was grinning ear to ear. He is one of those rare people who just lights up the room with their presence. Believe it or not, he had a full thick hair at that time along with a full mustache and chops aka sideburns to match. His style was circa 1970s with a tight shirt, watch with a wide leather band and bell bottom pants. Even though he was an adult and had this “bigger than life” persona, he made me feel like I mattered even if I was just a lil brat (if u ask Carla that is putting it mildly). Aba looked straight at me with his kind eyes and sincerely asked me how I was doing and listened to what I had to say. This initial interaction made a lasting impression on me. As the years went by, I realized this is just how Aba was. Caring…friendly…generous…and just a genuine nice guy. He was also very charming and magnetic to the ladies(sorry Mo and Vic). These are qualities I wished I had but never came close to having. In addition to treating people with respect, the other main thing I tried to emulate from him was always putting his kids first. Anytime Aba talked about Mo and/or Vic, he beamed with excitement and pride. Mo and Vic, you already know this but I just want to say it anyway, you guys were his pride and joy. Yes…even more than the Eagles, which he loved. As your uncle and avid eagles fan, I am proud that when he passed, you guys dressed him with his favorite Eagles sweatshirt and matching hat as his send off garb. GO BIRDS and Dallas Sucks!!! When I last saw Aba lucid, I take solace that we were watching the Eagles beat the crap out of the Cowboys. Did I already say Dallas sucks? Oh yeah…I am also grateful that my kids and I were able to say our goodbyes to him before his condition got really bad. Aba your generosity to me and my kids will never be forgotten. I was relieved for Aba that when things become dire, Mo and Vic along with Doc Rock were there for him 24/7 ensuring he was safe and comfortable until the end. Not only am I grateful for your efforts but appreciate the entire family’s love and support for each other during this difficult time. Bottom line I just want to tell everyone that Aba was a great brother…father…uncle…friend…and son. He definitely was just a genuinely good guy. We love you Aba. Rest in peace. We will miss you dearly but at least now Mom has someone in heaven to poke her finger at and order around other than uncle Tito. For the rest of us still living in this earth, please don’t ever forget that life is short and make sure to hug your loves a little tighter.
