Gerald Wan 温兆洪

August 20th, 1949 - September 21st, 2023
Gerald was blessed by a life amongst close knit family. He is survived by his wife Kit Ling, children Milton and Kim, grandchildren Elliot and Theodore, and siblings Helen, Eva, Stephen and Irene.
Gerald studied at Wah Yan College and PolyU in Hong Kong before obtaining a Master of Science in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering at Manchester University in the early 70’s. Upon returning to Hong Kong, he subsequently joined the workforce as an IT professional in the tech and finance industries, at one point deployed by Citibank to countries around the world.
It was on one of these deployments where he grew a fondness for Australia and made the subsequent move to settle and raise his family there.
Gerald embraced life in Australia. He made a beautiful home in the Hills area of Sydney, with painstaking attention to the design and build the family home and laboured over his beloved garden.
Gerald was also a loyal employee, working at AMP Capital for over 25 years.
In the later years of Gerald’s life, he was able to devote more time to his passions, of which he had many, including model trains and miniatures, photography, and gardening. He was also devoted to his grandchildren and dogs.
Ever a private person, Gerald fought a long, quiet battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.
Gerald will be remembered as a gentle man who was devoted to his family and unfailingly kind to those around him in times of need. He was a man of few words who spoke most eloquently with his hands.

I am truly saddened by Gerald’s passing. An extremely kind and unassuming man, he will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Destiny must have brought us together. We met in a dramatic way. My wife Irene was his younger sister hence Gerald & I were brothers in law. In the run up to our wedding in December 1983, I had met almost the entire Wan family, except Gerald & Kitty, because they were posted away from Hong Kong. I was however able to see his characteristic smile in pictures and heard about his exquisite taste and preference for black leather shoe lace shoes. One evening around 8:00pm in September 1983, I was at the car park entrance of Windsor House, Causeway Bay. I saw a person hurriedly crossing the street from Park Lane Hotel to where I was and we ran into each other face to face. Not having met before, I recognised the smile and the black shoe lace shoes. We were looking at each other’s eyes, and greeted each other by our first names. 40 years onwards, we still talked about this first encounter. May Gerald Wan rest in eternal peace.

Gerald Oh Gerald, we were best of friends in primary five in Wah Yan. We parted for over half a century and found each other unchanged when we met again in 2012. You were kind, gentle, quiet and considerate as ever, a true example of a 'Man For Others' as our Jesuits teachers like us to be. Always prefer to stay quietly in the background or stand on the side, this moment you have no choice but to take centre stage and let us tell you how important you are in our lives and how much we love you! I am saddened by the passing of Gerald. We have known each other through a lot of years, from teenage years, adulthood and senior years. He typified the phrases of "quiet achiever" and "actions (and results) speak louder than words". Enough said. May he rest in eternal peace, free from all pain and sufferings.

Gerald, or "Jar Lo" as some of us classmates would amicably call him and he would readily respond. I remember the times that I sat in front of him in class. He was so gentle and quiet that sometimes I wouldn’t even know that he was in class. I managed to sit and speak to him during our WahYah HK-67 Toronto Reunion in 2009 and listen as he spoke fondly about his hobby, photography. He will be missed.

We were very fortunate to have Gerald and Kitty as friends as far back as the mid 70s and as neighbors in the 80s. So the news of Gerald’s passing has saddened us. Gerald was a considerate, thoughtful and gentle soul. He was very dedicated to his family. He enjoyed working on home projects and he was a master craftsman. I was amazed when he paved his backyard and every brick was laid meticulously with precision and care. It seemed nothing was too difficult for Gerald. This is only one example of how much effort and love he put into his home. Our families stayed in touch throughout the years so I will miss his humor and witty emails. My condolences to the Wan family. Gerald is and will be sadly missed.
