I met George at a soccer game one Saturday. We hit it off right away as we both were local Teamster truck drivers and had work in common. I loved spending time with George. Hard to put into words right now. I know that there are so many wonderful stories and happy hours spent with George and the kids that you all will remember and enjoy retelling I’m sure.

As a member of our church, Bible study, and close neighbor, we knew George to be a man of integrity, compassion, and admirable honesty. You always knew where you stood with George, and we counted it a privilege to have him as a friend. His sense of humor was on target, and his laughter contagious. His faithful care of his wife, Mary Lou, during her final illness, was more than just admirable — it was a sincere expression of love, and of their many years together. We lost touch when George and Linda moved to Lincoln, but always heard great things about their life together, even in the midst of some serious physical struggles. George is an example of a life well-lived, and well-loved. Our heartfelt prayers and good wishes go out to Linda, George, Jr., and all the Derieg clan. What a wonderful legacy!

George was a wonderful neighbor to have for many years here in San Lorenzo. He was a great protector who loved his family so much. When my father passed away many years ago, he always watched over my mom, sister and I. Checking in, being kind and helpful. May he rest in peace. We loved him.

I have many many memories of my great friend George! George was a tough guy and what us old school people call a man’a man. But one of my favorite memories of George showed his soft side. I had the pleasure of coaching the Challenger baseball team in San Lorenzo with George! We had lots of family volunteers to help and the joy it bought to those kids and their parents was beyond awesome! George had a great heart and gave each of those kids a fantastic experience playing baseball. It was always fun and I can still see the smile on his face during the games. George also loved his family and country very much and was a true American Hero! He is very much missed by us all!

George was always a fun dad at soccer games, birthday parties and other events when we were kids. He always brought a good energy. I remember that he was patient with all of us. My own dad is also a Teamster and a former truck driver. I remember some good truck driver conversations over the years, even if I couldn't understand some of the jokes & experiences as a young kid. Based on my experiences with George as a kid and based on the other comments here, it seems that George had a good handle on the important things in life. A good lesson for us all. May George W. Derieg rest in peace, and may George M. Derieg and the entire family find peace and comfort in all of the positive memories.

I think of your Dad and your family and Challenger Baseball. It was the best of times for my kids and family. There are so many challenges that children with disabilities face as well as their families. Your Dad and Mom took my family under their wings as soon as we met. Offering whatever help we needed as Reed began to live life after cancer that paralyzed him. Little George became his Buddy and friend. Then Teresa joined the team after being diagnosed with Blounts Disease. Amy, Jennifer and your cousin took turns being her Buddy. Your Dad was such a great coach and inspiration. He taught all of you to see beyond the outside of someone to what is on the inside. I will always hold these memories tight in my heart. I have so much respect for your family and the love you continue to share. Thank you to Big George for all you did for my family. I hope you and Reed have played a good game of catch in Heaven. God Bless all of you.
