George E. Lewis
April 26th, 1936 - January 22nd, 2021
April 26th, 1936 - January 22nd, 2021
John 11: 25-26 Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live; even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die.”
George Edward Lewis was born on April 26, 1936, in Louisburg, North Carolina to the late James Alexander Lewis and Hattie Perry Lewis. On Friday, January 22, 2021, at Baptist Hospital, Winston Salem, North Carolina, George was called to eternal rest. He was 84 years old.
In George’s primary years, he was educated in the Franklin County School system. George was a member of a large farming family in North Carolina - his parents had 14 children. The family was known throughout the region (which included other towns and counties) as a God Fearing, loving, Christian family - “those Lewis’s.” At a very early age, George was baptized and joined the family church, Mt. Hebron Holiness Church, where his father and mother were stalwart members - mother, Deaconess and father, Deacon. The family formed a choir in the church - The Joybells - of which George, along with his sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews were members.
In his early adult years, George migrated to New Jersey, where his brother encouraged him to come and find work. George found work as a truck driver, which he held for his entire working career. George was the father of three children, 2 daughters and a son. Upon retirement, George relocated to Winston Salem, North Carolina with his wife, Joyce Lewis. While residing in Winston-Salem, George became a member of St. Peter’s World Church and Outreach Center. George was an eager and consistent tither in support of his church.
George was a kindred spirit, a real jokester, and so full of life. He was always looking for an opportunity to share his inner spirit with those in his “court.” George liked center stage and was given all of it by those awaiting to engage with him. He was masterful at making people laugh, and was encouraged to do so by those who had gathered as his audience. We must not forget that George also had a serious side - those who knew him knew when the laughter had ended, and seriousness had begun.
George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters - Andrew , Thurston, Nathaniel, James Alexander, Grant , Cleotha ; Corabell , Mary , Esther , Lucy Ella , Hattie Louise .
George’s legacy continues to be shared by his loving wife, Joyce; daughters and their spouses, Valerie and Patrick, Sharon and David; son, Wendell; sisters, Novella and Etta; grandchildren, Patrick, Nyleen, Andrew, Christopher and Raquel; great grandchildren, Christopher and Jeremiah; stepchildren, Rochell, Stephanie, Stacey and adoring nieces and nephews.
