George Weal of Temple City, California passed away December 30, 2023, at 87. George was born in Wilmar, CA (now Alhambra) on November 12, 1936, to James (Jim) and Mildred (Toots) Weal. He was one of 3 children - his brother Gene and sister Beverly were his older siblings.

George grew up in Alhambra, played for the high school football team, and graduated from Mark Keppel in 1954. After graduation, he did automotive work for Chrysler-Buick but still had time for his hobbies like building his own ski boats, water skiing, and serving on the Mt Baldy ski patrol. In 1961, he was drafted into the army as part of the peacekeeping troops during the Berlin Conflict. Soon after his release from the service, he started to work for Caltech – which turned into an over 40-year career! For many of those years, George was the supervisor of the Caltech campus Heating and Ventilation shop. He was well known for his hard work, his sense of humor, his kindness, and knowing the very large campus like the “back of his hand”.

In 1966/1967, George was part of a bowling team in the area and met the love of his life, Joanne Nelson. By 1967 they were married and in 1970 they found a home in Temple City, CA. Their son, Jim was born in 1968, and Genine in 1975. George was known as a loving father who was always there for his kids. Every summer, he enjoyed taking his family on camping trips to the beach to go Boogieboarding or the Modesto Reservoir to go water skiing.

George loved to be out in nature and enjoy God’s creation. He took great delight in watching the antics of animals - especially his pets. Though he was always busy doing something, he enjoyed his share of classic car shows and automotive museums. Even in the closing days of his life, George found comfort in music - which was no doubt instilled in him by his mother. His Mom loved music and had him take up tap dancing and the banjo. For George, any music that featured stringed instruments like the banjo or guitar was to his liking whether it be the Spanish guitar of Jesse Cook or 50s/60s folk songs of the Kingston Trio.

George, like his father before him, was a “jack of all trades” so whether it was construction, car repair, electrical, plumbing, home additions, kitchen/bathroom remodels, roofing, concrete, sewing canvas, or upholstery these were all within his wheelhouse. (no pun intended)

One of George’s greatest treasures was getting to know his Grand Creator. Although he was a Sunday School teacher for several years with his wife Joanne, he studied the Bible in earnest starting in 1979 and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 4th, 1981. (Kiddingly he would say that every year thereafter, everyone would celebrate that special date with fireworks) George’s faith enhanced his already good qualities and made him an even better husband, father, and friend. For many years, George served as the coordinator of the West Temple City congregation assisting the body of elders with the meetings and the preaching work in Temple City, San Gabriel, and parts of San Marino.

Sadly, George is preceded in death by his wife Joanne, his parents Jim and Toots Weal, his brother Gene, and his sister Bev. Survivors include his two children, his nieces, and his large spiritual family of brothers and sisters.
