I met Gail on a walking/language holiday in the Basque Pyrenees. As she said later, 'We bonded over books' and we met up about four times a year since that time. How long ago was it? Maybe 14 years ago? I lived outside London and I'd come in and we'd do things together, interesting things - a chocolate tour of London was the first thing we did, I think - because Gail couldn't not be interesting. She was such an interested, curious person, so full of life and bounce. It's over 3 months now since she left us and I can't believe that I won't pick up the phone and hear her warm inquiries about me. Gail could talk - and so can I - so we'd talk and talk and talk when we met up and then we'd look at our watches and say, 'I can't believe the time!' Gail, I so looked forward to our meetings - I came away enriched, every time. You were a real giver.

Thinking of you, Gail, as I do so often. You were perfectly indelible in life, and it is so strange and sad that you are no longer with us, and left so suddenly. A few months and weeks was not enough to say goodbye. I try to honour you by not shrinking from life. "Why say no, when you can say yes." Miss you, dear friend. xx - Tracy

I have not been able to post, I cannot find the words for how much Gail’s friendship meant to me, being able to spend a week together, not knowing it would be our last visit. I have loved reading everyone’s tribute, she was truly loved by so many people. I find I still talk to her, still waiting for an answer, but I am sure it will come.

I first met Gail in the early eighties working at Davies Arnold Cooper, where she had the office next to mine and we were together with Pauline and Jackie. We had many fun times on the top floor of Bridewell Place. I spent a lot of time working with her for the library and realised very quickly that Gail was a force of nature, knew what she wanted and usually got her way but she did it in such a nice way that you never realised that she had steamrollered you yet again. On leaving DAC, our paths went separate ways for some years, but we would meet up occasionally. I last met Gail a few years ago when I was volunteering locally and contacted her out of the blue and we ended up going for a lovely day at Kew gardens. It was like we had seen each other only the other day. I had forgotten what a font of wisdom she was as well as her breadth of knowledge of the world. Unsurprisingly, she had a passion for books but also enjoyed walking and even persuaded me to join a ramblers walk. It was so sad when I heard of her passing and my thoughts go to her children Richard and Joanna.

I met Gail maybe 10 years ago. We were both members of the Ealing Walking Book Club. I valued her friendship and her wonderful capacity to explore new ideas and explore a subject in detail - just for the sheer pleasure of knowing. We also went on various singing days and eventually shared a week of singing on the island of Paros. Gail was the best of travelling companions- cheerful and funny. We performed some of the songs learned and rehearsed during the week at a local taverna. The somewhat bemused patrons were treated to a bunch of Brits singing, among other things, a Zulu war chant! I can still picture Gail’s tears of laughter at the ridiculousness of the event and her real pleasure in the whole experience.

This photo of Gail was taken in August 1995 in our back garden. It is how I like to remember her - deeply involved in a conversation and not afraid to put her ideas forward but always ready to listen to the other point of view. Rest in peace Gail x.
