James "Frenchie" Tschirhart
December 20th, 1938 - December 13th, 2025
December 20th, 1938 - December 13th, 2025
Frenchie meant the world to all of us
James Louis Bernard Tschirhart, lovingly known to all as “Frenchie”, departed us on December 13, 2025. He was born on Saturday, December 20, 1938, in Ervy-le-Chatel in the Champagne Region of France, to father Arnold J. Tschirhart and mother Lucie Tissot.
On December 5, 1945, at the age of six, James came to the United States aboard the ship, Gripsholm, with his father, mother, siblings, and two nieces. They landed at Ellis Island and took a train from New York City to San Antonio, TX. They settled on a farm in Atascosa, TX, where their family lived in a small, four-room house and worked the land. James’s mother fed their family wonderful meals and he helped on the farm by picking corn and cotton and caring for the animals.
James attended Idlewild School, a one-room schoolhouse, where James not only learned the curriculum, but also learned how to speak English. In 1957, he graduated from Southwest High School, where he played on the football and basketball teams, served as Library Club President, Junior President, and Student Council Secretary, and was aptly named “Cutest Boy” by his peers.
James attended San Antonio College for two years. His day started with a 4:00 am shift at the dairy, followed by classes, working the family farm, and other part time jobs. With the help of his friends, James tended and harvested an onion patch that his father gifted to him. They would sell the produce at El Mercado in San Antonio to help with college expenses. James applied to and was accepted by the University of Texas where he graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.
James became a father in 1961 with the birth of Leslie in San Antonio, TX. James welcomed his second child, Beau, in 1977 in Austin, TX. He loved his children and was always supportive.
James was a cultivator of ideas, experiences, gardens, and relationships. An eccentric entrepreneur, who throughout college and after, sold Vita Craft cookware, china, and crystal, claiming the top salesman title for many years. With financial savvy, he invested in real estate and other ventures. He loved to hunt and fish in the Texas Hill Country, lakes, and Gulf Coast. He was a builder who, with his own two hands, built four homes along the Colorado River and Canyon Lake. James found beauty where none was expected, planting gardens in forgotten corners to cultivate food and flowers to nourish and delight his friends, loved ones, and people he’d just met. He created friendships everywhere he went and was deeply loyal to his lifelong friends.
James is preceded in death by his parents and his seven siblings: Nanette Tschirhart, John Tschirhart, Henry Arnold Tschirhart, Jacqueline Pailthorpe, Lucette Weidmann, Suzanne Stanfield, and Jenny Padilla.
He is survived by his two children, Leslie, Beau (Sarah); his grandchildren Ilona, Leila, and Ford; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The Celebration of Life Event is planned for January 31, 2026 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the The Big Haus Texas Oasis: 321 Weiss Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

How did you meet James?
We met Frenchie about 15 years ago at a Serranos Happy Hour. He was wearing a beret, had a ponytail and earrings! Our group of friends loved hanging out with him. We would go to his house on the lake, meet at Point Venture, Jonestown, Volente Beach just to name a few of our fun times. We decided to wear our shirts and take Frenchie with us to a Mardi Gras celebration. I think he would’ve loved the marching band! Definitely would’ve dine his ham bone moves..hahaha!

I met Frenchie about 15 years ago at a Happy Hour. Some friends and I were enjoying a cold beer after work and Frenchie sat down next to me. We had a long conversation that night about cold beer and the very interesting and detailed art of making boudin (which I was later so excited to be a part of with him and many of his other friends and family). That Happy Hour was the beginning of a Great Friendship and many more opportunities to get together. Frenchie was always the “life of the party”. We were always met with that quirky smile he had, a big hug, and his infectious laughter. After a while, we were all invited out to his Travis Peak house and also his Canyon lake house. We came to love and appreciate the way he added his own unique character to everything he built. We were also very lucky to have been able to meet some of his family – his brothers John & Henry, and also his kids Leslie & Beau. So Many Great Memories! Ole’ Ola - my friend. You will be deeply missed, but will continue to live on in our hearts.

One of my favorite sausage making moments was out at the Lago Vista house with Dad, Jack, Luanne, Floyd, Daryl & Ilona. January 14th, 2014. It was an epic feat. Daryl had brought this big commercial grinder. Dad got the pig intestines and heads from a local farmer. Floyd brought the venison. Everyone was all in. We had the best pan sausage and linked boudin. This garage was under the first house he built out on the Singleton Bend property. Covered with incredible ventilation and a beautiful garden out back. James would rather share his harvest with friends and strangers than to eat it himself. I loved making rice, but I've never had to make this much of it. Note to self, do it in smaller batches!

This is Beau Tschirhart, Sarah Hobson, Leila Calfee, Ilona Tschirhart and Ford Calfee. We wanted to check out the new bridge over Lady Bird Lake and the weather was fantastic. Dad loved to walk and take in the view. He was rarely living on the edge and when he saw new things he was usually with us. We'll always miss him and his excitement to explore. Loving these shirts...don't think we've ever pulled of a group outing with all the same shirts!

When Dad liked you he would let you know. When he loved you he'd show it all in his smile. This photo is Leslie and Ilona with James. We were out at his place in Lago. The cool mornings were always so amazing. The view was peaceful and serene. In the case James is still hovering among us, I would hope he gets to keep this view for all eternity. I remember returning from California to help frame up the house. When I arrived the base was already there and I was amazed at what it was like without any walls. I would stay on the job site as long as I could. Uncle Henry was there for a long period of time to help. I wish I had more photos on my computer of this. I know they are all on some CD or on another hard drive. Cheers Dad...thanks for building such a beautiful window into the Colorado River.

Spoons & Bones. Not for soup, but entertainment. James had a knack for bursting out with a rhythm on his thighs with either. He had this wardrobe at the Lake House with his personals and there were always two bones that were smooth to the touch, about 6 inches each with a slight curve to them. There was a time I was embarrassed when he'd bring them out...I soon learned that it wasn't so easy to play them like he did. Don't get me wrong. I did try. I will always leave the trophy to Dad. He'd crouch a little and smile big, really getting into it.
